All my hockey training was about short term burst, so all the training was about building explosive power, bench press doesn't do that, explosive pushups would be more effective for upper body strength. although my trainer never had me focused on that.  Skating treadmill, agility ladders, stair climbs, Squat jumps, tons of stretching, yoga, burst cardio,......

The science of sport-specific training can and has been debated for a long time.  One thing you CAN'T debate however, is that they've been using the SAME type of exercises at the NHL draft combine for a very, very long time.  Any player who's career has them on a trajectory to be a professional hockey player had better do their 'due diligence' so to speak and devote at least some training geared towards these specific tests imo.  To add to that, if you really are doing the type of training that gets your body into the absolute best shape possible, you should be doing - at least occasionally, some of these so called 'old school' exercises anyway such as pull-ups, bench-presses, dips, ect....the more I think about it, there's really no excuse for an athlete who wants to be a professional hockey player (and could potentially be in the league next year) not to be able to perform these combine tests.

The problem is you think these results mean something...  These are drafted combine results, not opening season camp measurements.  IF these results played any role in what scouts thought of you, maybe they it would be worth focusing on, but they don't, not for a top 10 pick so why would a kid switch training focus for something that has no impact on him?

UM no thanks..that would be a massive fail on JB if he made that deal

Well I did change it to the #55 and perhaps adding Goldobin wasn't the right choice, maybe more so Virtanen.

The #7 will be very expensive, Tanev alone won't get it.

Hmm, Canucks are plugging Tippett today. Maybe it's a countdown thing, and they have him in the late teens:

Tippett's one of my top choices. I'd love to come out of the draft with at least two of Vilardi, Glass, Tippett, Pettersson, Makar, Liljegren.

He did very well on all the endurance tests so he's obviously in shape.  Strength is not determined by bench press and pulls.

There is a definite genetic component to doing pull-ups -- some do them easily and some (like myself) really struggle, despite having no problem cranking out pushups and crunches.  Mittelstadt admiited he is still a little "pudgy" and extra weight makes a big difference.  Drop even 5-10lbs and you'll see how many more reps you can bang off.

Someone sell me on Tippett.  How he isn't Virtanen 2.0

Tell me how he's better than Tolvanen or Vesalainen using more than just points as your reasoning

That's a really good question. Both have size, speed and a great shot, both are RW and Canadian. Maybe it comes down to effort and attitude?

Tippett's also been compared to players like Kessel.

Just posted this in another thread as well. Thought it might be a good refresher for all the fans suggesting that we trade Tanev to get another 1st rounder.

Remember, just because they are a first round pick, there's no guarantee that they will ever have an impact in the NHL.

This is a breakdown of actual historical chances of prospects playing in the NHL as well as playing 100 games or more:

Borrringgggggg

Total snooze fest man. We understand that not every first round/ top prospect pans out. But it's June and we're all getting hype for the draft. No point stating the obvious. As Vancouver Canucks fans this is the one point of the year where we can look forward to.

I can appreciate what your saying, just not in this thread.

I think you might have a hard time proving that the majority of fans on this board see this as the obvious :)
