'Probably my fault': Canucks GM comes to emotional rescue for erratic Eriksson

What do you do with Loui Eriksson?

You can’t buy him out. You can’t trade him because nobody is going to take on a contract that has four years remaining at a US $6-million annual salary cap hit and includes a no-trade clause.

A buyout of the struggling 32-year-old winger is a non-starter because he has $14 million remaining in signing bonuses and they’re excluded in determining the total cost for a two-thirds buyout.

The buyout length is twice the term of the remaining contract, so it’s eight years at minimal relief and a cap hit of $5.5 million the next three years. It’s then reduced to $3.5 million before the final four years at $500,000.

Eriksson had just 10 goals and 23 points last season in 50 games. His 47 points (21-26) in 115 games as a Canuck pale in comparison to the 30-goal, 63-point season with Boston in 2015-16, which prompted the Canucks to come calling in free agency.

Last season, Eriksson missed a dozen games with an MCL (medial collateral ligament) left knee sprain Oct. 14. He then had a spurt of nine points (5-4) in nine games, but wouldn’t score again for 18 games. He is defensively responsible and a good penalty killer, but that’s not what the Canucks are paying for.

“Part of it is probably my fault,” said Canucks general manager Jim Benning. “He has always played with 30-goal (potential) guys and he had Brad Richards in Dallas and in Boston he was with David Krejci, one of the best playmakers in the league.

“Nothing against our centres, but he hasn’t found the chemistry or fit. Maybe it’s (Elias Pettersson) when he comes in and plays centre at some point. Maybe it’s (Adam) Gaudette. I understand the criticism because of the money we’re paying, but with Daniel and Henirk (Sedin) gone, we need to rely on him and bring leadership to some of our young guys.”

That would be a stretch for a quiet, reserved player who’s hard to find after games.

“He understands the situation,” said Benning. “I feel he can get back to being a 20-goal scorer and other things can help us be competitive.”

This only makes me like Benning more.

You can certainly tell JB played.  He’s got his mates’ backs.  TG has the same thing too.  So does TL.  They all played, and know how important that is.  I ne er felt that way about WD.

Well, he brought Eriksson in so it makes sense he would continue to support him and/or make excuses.  Is Horvat not a decent center?  How about Henrik with which he had previous chemistry?

Nope... sorry... this is on Eriksson, imo.  I DO feel he can contribute more.  I know he's getting older every year, but I can't help but think that if he can remain healthy that he still has gas left in the tank to produce.  One doesn't just fall off a production cliff like that for no reason (generally speaking).

I personally feel Eriksson is pretty underrated, especially after last year. After his abysmal 2016-17 season, he was rightly criticized, but not enough fans acknowledged his notable improvement last year in my opinion. Not only did he show that he was reliable defensively, but his offense improved, to the point where he was producing at a low top 6 level.

So after reading all the latest posts . Im sorry I have to disagree. Eriksson was brought in to be a 30 goal man not a baby sitter not a defensive specialist , a point producer  period the rest of his game is a bonus. We can get two players that would have the same cost with greater  production for what we pay him. Saying we haven't found a play making center to play with him is weak at best. Maybe a healthy scratch would bring some fire into his belly. Two weeks ridding the pine may help his attitude. JB screwed the pooch on this one.

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying Eriksson was what we always wanted or even earned his contract money. I'm simply comparing his 2017-18 season to his 2016-17 season. Dramatic improvement there in my opinion.

Same. I've always respected how much of a straight shooter Jim is. Taking a hit for one of his players speaks volumes about him. I can only imagine that all present roster players on the Canucks appreciate this, especially Eriksson.

Hopefully Eriksson isn't taking it too easy this summer.........

Seriously, do the Eriksson haters actually attend games?

Why, does he do a song and dance on the bench that doesn't get picked up on tv?

He's been a massive disappointment, no need to be a hater or a wannabe scout to see that.  Sure he has a role on this team, and they'll need his leadership going forward but it's time to call a spade a spade on this one.

For his contract, Loui is not even close to the player we expected him to be.  Really, he should be paid 1 to 2 million, and on a 2 year contract max.  Even then, he would be taking the place of a younger player.

We are stuck with him for four more years though.

He is, maybe they should put them together more.

I think Eriksson is going to have a lot of pressure on him this year, he's now the highest paid player on the team I believe and he has played like a fringe 4th liner.

No more Sedins, Loui is going to have to take a big jump on and off the ice, let's hope we see the Loui that played on Dallas and Boston instead of the Loui we have seen in Vancouver this far.

I'm pulling for this guy to turn it around.

He's never played like a 4th line fringe player, but I get where you're coming from.

I think he plays on Pettersson's line and puts up some decent numbers this season.

Hmm, a second line of Virtanen-Pettersson-Eriksson?

A lot to ask for from Elias.

Well, my preference would be Eriksson  Big Joe T   Pettersson, but I'm told there's no way that's happening.

Soooo...maybe  Eriksson   Pettersson  Granlund or,

Eriksson  Gaudette  Pettersson

Naw.  This team really needs a Big Joe in the middle.  Hope San Jose goes after Tavares and can't find the salary cap to sign him.B)

I think, barring no free agent signings, we will see something like this for the forwards ...

Leipsic Horvat Boeser

Petterson Sutter Goldobin

Eriksson Gaudette Virtanen

Baertschi Granlund Gagner

Gaunce/Archibald

Dahlen first call up

I HIGHLY doubt that.

Also I guarantee we're gonna be signing or acquiring some forwards. I would say Grabner, Bozak, and JVR will be on their radar.
