Benning is applying capital asset theory

What is the most valuable commodity in the NHL today?  Simple. Young good defence prospects.

There is a theory in business that you stockpile valuable assets that others covet and then investors will want a return commensurate to their perceived risk. Stockpile young D. The league values them high. Prove they are  up and comers and you can ask a big price.

Canuck young defensemen on the team or in the system include Hutton, Gudbranson, Juolevi, Larssen, Pedan, Tryamkin, Neill, Olson, Brisebois, Subban, Stecher. Add Tanev and Sbisa as a little older but still relatively young and you have 13 valuable assets on D.

We just watched Edmonton trade Taylor Hall for Adam Larson. Wow. That sets the price for a good young d prospect pretty darn high.

When we need to augment the rebuild and add top line scoring talent (as the Sedins age and drop to the 2nd line or retire) Benning is putting the team in a great position. Stockpiling young d talent and at the right time trading one or two for the next Taylor Halls.

Benning was a defenseman.  He is a great scout. He is going to do a great job  acquiring and developing young d. Capital asset theory will get us our Sedin replacements in time by trading young d at the right time and price. The current crop plus the ones he adds in the next couple of years will give him enough capital to do one or two trades at the right time.

Just remember, to get the deal that New Jersey did, they gave up a top pairing #1 young RD to a desperate team.  We don't have that asset yet.  Every team wants good D, but look how many actually get moved.

Not a top pairing D.  # 3 defence shutdown guy.

Excellent post.  If we can't draft our next set of Twins, we can trade for them.  I like your idea.  I hope JB reads your idea!

The NHL seems to be cyclical.   For a while there elite goalies were in demand (we know something about that).  Then elite centers were scarce.   Now it's top 4 D. How long each phase lasts seems to fluctuate.

I think the real key is keeping a pulse on the whole league and trying to see the demand before it arises - then you can really capitalize on others' needs.

Your right OP, but because the value is so high so to then is the contracts for said Elite defencemen we are stockpiling. I never thought id be this pumped for our defense but with Oli Joulevi being drafted and with Hutton and Tryamkin and Pedan, I'm going to be watching the back end like never before, I hope that comes across as awkward as it sounds because I mean it.

Trader Jim's eyeball > analytics.

I'd argue wholeheartedly that the eyeball is a far greater weapon than any rich analytic theory for determining talent/upside and Trader Jim is seeing 20/20.

Love Benning!  Has he ever improved our roster starting with limited assets and rather quickly might I add.

What a guy!

And if the latest rumour is true then we might be joining the ranks of trade on the Hall for Larsson level.

Tanev for Landeskog

Landeskog reminds me of getting a young raw  Naslund

Ya the loss of Tanev stings but if we sign Demers and within a year, Stecher and Tryamkin become factors and add in Gudbranson then suddenly the loss isn't so bad but we get a young 25+ goal scorer.

Landeskog-Horvat-Hansen

Landeskog-Horvat-Virtanen

Landeskog-Horvat-Boeser

All great combinations on paper

Taylor Hall was a top 5 left winger in the entire league.  Larson has improved, but one year ago he was almost in bust territory (not completely sure of this:)  He is not in the top 5 or 10 in the entire league at defense.  He may have potential to get there, but he's not there now.

That is a huge trade that NJ surely won.  Then Edmonton goes out and signs Lucic to a 7 year deal for Taylor Hall money...

Are they better at the end of the day.. Maybe.  They gave up a lot to get Larson, and paid a lot to get Lucic. It's a two steps forward, one step back kinda day for the Oiler's.

I'm a back end-gazer as well. I think this one really has legs...
