Identity of Canucks?

Probably, the Canucks aren't going to add any more big-name players to the team for this off-season. Both Benning and Weisbrod keep talking about defining what a Canuck player looks like and using that to help guide the decisions that they do when looking to add or subtract players. So what's the Canucks' identity?

  • Sedin-Sedin-Eriksson
  • Baertschi-Sutter-Hansen
  • Virtanen-Horvat-Burrows
  • Dorsett-Granlund-Etem
  • Edler-Tanev
  • Gudbranson-Hutton
  • Sbisa-Tryamkin-Biega-Larsen-Juolevi
  • Miller-Markstrom

On D, unless Juolevi manages to make the team, we have a big D that probably will not generate much points but does have a lot of players that are physical so perhaps physicality and size is the identity of our D?

On O, we have a first-line that has a lot of skill and hockey sense but doesn't have much speed or hitting. But our other forward lines don't necessarily share that same identity.

Honestly, the main thing I see in our team is that there's an abundance of Europeans, some Canadians, and a scarcity of Americans. So perhaps we're hoping to build Team Europe?

Ok. If that's all it is, then I'm going to have to postpone purchasing my parade paraphernalia.

Don't jump the gun on that one.

Just enjoy watching the team play better than last year and experience the growth of our young, future core.

I'm pretty excited, but I don't expect a whole lot out of next season. To win more games and score more goals would be great.

I just read Benning's comments on today's trade: http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/benning-has-no-concerns-about-signing-eriksson-long-term and http://www.tsn.ca/canucks-sign-eriksson-to-6-year-36m-deal-1.519158, and some of the things he mentioned about Eriksson are: real smart, two-way player, skilled, improved power play. If I were to guess, the identity for forwards is 'skilled and smart'. If so, I hope our young guys are spending most of their time this summer with the Sedins.

Since management took over we've repeatedly heard up tempo, speed, physical 4 line hockey. I think we're in a better position to finally see that this season, but I'm not sold on Willie D as a coach so who knows. Last year he sort of gets a pass, it's hard with that many bodies going in and out of the line-up but even the season before the team often looked confused and had no identity.

There's quite a bit of speed here now and some real physicality for the first time in forever, so lets see more of that and less people trying to do a sedin cycle unless their name is Sedin.

Team Sweden

Yeah. We have Swedens top Olympic line from several past olympics and world championships.  Nothing like having the best players from a hockey country like Sweden repping your 1st line!

Since the start of the Gillis era the team identity has stayed similar. With the exception of the one year Torts was here. Skilled Puck possession style, good penalty killing. Hard to play against but not overly physical. I don't see much difference with how Bennings has constructed his group other than being more emphasis on strong character.

I wouldn't say that "hard to play against" was part of our identity.
