[Report] Markstrom close to extension with Canucks

Recommended Posts

Allen got 4 x $4.35M per. Vasilevskiy 3 x $3.5M per.

...would be happy with either one of those terms but less AAV considering those guys are younger and have higher pedigree.

Markstrom is a stud though. I'm hoping for 4 years or maybe even 5. After this upcoming season, the contract will begin to look like a steal as he becomes starter for a few seasons with Demko in the reins and Miller likely gone with his contract expiring.

Please no...unless at a "back ups" salary. (no more than 3m)

It's way to early... I'm still not completely sold on Marky as a #1.

Sure he played 15-20 solid games for us. He is not a top 10 goalie in this league IMO.

There are way too many good goalies available.

There will be a bunch more available super cheap after the season leading into the expansion draft.

It will be probably be the best goalie market ever available in the NHL.

Take advantage of a good situation for change Jimbo.

Allen was the starter for the Blues. Vasilevskiy was backup and will become the starter if Bishop is traded this off season.

Assuming Miller plays out the season with us, Marky won't become the starter for another season, so I think something similar to the Vasilevskiy contract would be fair.

No problem seeing JB give JM b/t 3 or 4 years 3-4 mil per, but wouldn't be at all surprised to see slightly higher.

This guy hasn't reached his ceiling yet imo.  Looking forward to seeing what he can do behind the upgrades on D.

I'm thinking that a transition will happen this year with Miller moving into a supporting role.

At best it'll be 50 /50,  at very best.

You don't give a guy 6mil to 'support '.

If we trade Miller at the TDL,  then okay,  JM takes over.

Good point. Is this the last year of Miller's contract?

I wish I was a goalie in the NHL with 59 games under my belt since being drafted 8 years ago. Even with sub par numbers I would be set for life.

Just because he doesn't have the 'games' under his belt doesn't mean he hasn't put as much work into his career as other so called 'starters'.  5+ years riding busses in the minors vs 1st class airfare and 5 star hotels and such isn't glamorous.

You get into trouble paying for potential instead of past performance.  The guy's NHL career tanked once before on Florida, so he isn't a sure thing.

I think he will be a perfectly serviceable average NHL starter.  He should be closer to $3 million than $4 million if he wants term longer than 3 years.  It should be long enough to ensure Demko gets his feet wet and see how he is performing, but not so long that we can't get rid of the contract if Demko shows to be a star in year 2 of being an NHL back up.

Yeah...you would be. But you would also get to see what it's like to be thrown to the wolves way before you're ready (Florida) then have to endure one of the worst years in a franchise's history (Vancouver).

Anyone who's seen Markstrom play knows he's a good goalie. It makes no sense for us to not get him locked into a new contract now.

He'll be on an expiring contract this year.

Best case scenario: Miller has a great year behind a refreshed D,  JM continues to develop into a bona-fide #1,  Demko demonstrates he's legit in Utica,  Miller is traded at TDL for something useful to us,  JM plays out the remainder of the season like a boss and Demko gets his 5 or so games with the big club!

Again,  that's best case scenario - and we know how those stories usually end in Vancouver.
