[Discussion] Sign middle 6 forward or trade for top 6 forward?

Recommended Posts

Should the Canucks sign a middle 6 forward (Pirri for exapmple) or should they trade a higher profile player (Edler for example) and get a solid top 6 forward in return? What do you guys think? They definitely need more offense but at what price.

They don't need more offense, they're in the perfect position currently to sell tickets feigning competency with the influx of Eriksson, Gudbranson etc while on track for yet another bottom 10 finish.

So neither, just keep the team as is.

We have 3 full lines worth of middle 6 forwards already

I'm not sure what this means but Daniel was the 8th highest scoring LW and Eriksson was 7th for RW.  Henrik had some injuries and a bit of an off year but was still 30th for centres.  I have no doubt Henrik will be top 15 this year again. Are you talking about this line as one of the 3?

The middle six are the second and 3rd lines so it sounds like we are set if the rest are middle sixers.  I think we are looking pretty good.  I think our defense is tough and young.  I think our forwards have some real potential with Baertschi, Rodin, Virtanen, and Hansen, but I would like to see the canucks sign or trade for at least one more sniper to provide lots of good competition at camp.

You're either insulting the Sedins and Eriksson, or massively over-rating our 4th line. Which is it?

EDIT: it was over-rating our 4th line. Which to me wouldn't even be a good 3rd line in Utica.

We need a 2nd line winger who can score. That should be Bearschi, provided he is given those top 6 minutes. Hopefully Virtanen can start to produce offence, who knows maybe he had a good offseason training and can infuse some needed offense to our 2nd line.

Other than that we could get Landeskog to give us 2 lines worth of scoring :towel:

We sure could use another guy that is good for 25-30 goals.  Our offense would be better for it, but think we would be trading a recently improved D to get that so it is a bit of a head scratcher.  Lets hope the young guys fill the void and continue getting better.

Middle-6, or middling-6? Lines 1, 3, and 4 are all good, but we have a notable deficiency on line 2.

Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson

Baertschi - Horvat - Hansen

Burrows - Sutter - Virtanen/Rodin

Etem - Granlund - Dorsett

Gaunce, Grenier

IMO, trading for an impact top-6 LW would be ideal. Not only is there a big drop-off after Daniel, but outside of Baertschi there is no LW with top-6 potential anywhere in the system either. The rumours suggest that is exactly what JB is trying to find.

Hard to say what we truly need right now.  Initially, it looks like we need a solid left winger who can put up 30-40 points.

But with Rodin coming in and both Virtanen and Baertschi being a year older and perhaps better prepared to contribute, we *may* be ok as-is.  But does management want to take that chance?  To me, considering we have the cap space, I wouldn't mind bolstering the 2nd line with a good winger.  Hopefully one who can play both sides, but otherwise probably a left wing for three reasons.

First, we have two potential 2nd line RW options in Virtanen and Rodin, and Hansen to fall back on otherwise.  On the LW, we'd only be relying on Baertschi.

Second, we have Boeser who is eventually (hopefully) going to fill a top right wing position.

Third, once the Sedins retire, we have even less talent on that left side.

I confused middle 6 with bottom 6.  Basically all of my comments are irrelevant to the discussion.  I am so sorry

i believe the terms come from....middle six when the team has two equal scoring 2nd and 3rd lines and ...bottom six when both 3rd and 4th lines are more, checking lines..when burrows and kesler were our 3rd line, they chipped in goals as welland sometimes were better than our second line...that's my take on it...

benning said he wanted another scoring winger with grit ....i don't think baerschi or virtanen are ready to take that step yet...eventually, i think virtanen and boeser become our 2nd line wingers until they can push the sedins down a line...if we could develop a line that can outplay the sedins, we'll be on our way...

I love Hansen, but I would try to use Hansen/Sbisa and add a pick or a prospect (not a 1st rounder) and see if we could get a LW for our top 6.   If there is no one that is interested (likely) then I'd sign a depth guy like Pirri and go from there

Dont think the Canucks have the assets to give up (that wont gut the team) to get that top 6 forward unfortunately.

A Sbisa+Hansen+pick may get you a serviceable second liner but not much more and a Sbisa or Hansen + pick will only get you a bottom 6 player. Imo a Sbisa + pick may get a team to take his contract but dont expect much back aside from the cap space.

While Sbisa did improve (slightly) this year, at this time, I do not think he brings anything to the table that could not be had from a player making 40% of his salary.
