any updates or ideas?

saw a while ago that the canucks sent qualifying offers to 4 or 5 guys.  I only recall pedan being one of them.  any news on whether any have

accepted?  i'm not too familiar with q.o.'s

I see there is about 4 million left to spend and so far they've signed a full load for the canucks, but Utica is still very short of players.  I think they have 22 canucks and 20 or 21 in Utica.  most likely they'll want 47- 48 guys tho. 4 or 5 AHL guys will cost another million probably.  i'm wondering whether that cap space will be there if a few guys sign their q.a.'s.  do we have much flexibility? heard benning say recently that there was no problem with signing another winger...what are the options here?

talk to me about it.  and each other of course  lol

Grenier and Zalewski accepted their QO's. Pedan has not. Reported he's seeking a 1 way deal. Probably similar to what Etem got.

QO's won't affect the cap unless those guys are on the Canucks roster & not Utica's. However all of Grenier, Pedan, & Zalewski will need to clear waivers to get to Utica cuz they're all waiver eligible for this coming season.

Don't forget about all those minor free agent signings too, those guys were mostly all for Utica.

I really hope we don't lose Pedan. I know they aren't having much luck finding any takers for Sbisa but I have my fingers crossed as that's the best way to ensure Pedan has a spot and we wouldn't have to risk losing him.

As for Zalewski and Grenier they are likely to start the season in Utica and therefore would only be subject to re-entry waivers if we were to call them up and then try to send them back down at a later date. Correct me if I am wrong though as I am certainly no expert.

Waivers eligible players need to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL (even before the season opens). The good thing is that every team ends up sending a bunch of guys down as they make cuts from the training camps. So the likelihood of a claim is very low.

And re-entry waivers were eliminated from the CBA.

EDIT: Also, one a player clears waivers, they aren't subject to waivers again that season until they've either played 10 NHL games or been on an NHL roster for 30 days. So once they clear, they can be recalled and demoted repeatedly (without needing waivers again), until they hit those 10/30 limits (at which point they become waiver eligible again), or until the next season when everything starts over (and they once again need waivers to be assigned to the AHL).

So I pretty much had it exactly backwards? I did say I was no expert lol.

Thanks Sid!

No problem. It's confusing stuff and, unfortunately, the CBA isn't great for offering clear explanations, at least not in one place (you kind of need to read a few different sections and clauses to get all the information).

I'll make stab at explaining some of the other key points (going from memory here so I hope I don't make any mistakes):

Basically (and the CBA is terrible at making this point clear), whenever players are actually eligible for movement (ie: whenever they are allowed to be assigned to an AHL roster), the waiver rules are in effect. The confusing part is that the "waiver period" doesn't actually apply to the whole year, so there are some dates when waiver rules aren't technically in effect. However, during those dates, players can't be assigned to AHL rosters (so it really doesn't change anything).

Unfortunately, you have to link together a bunch of sections and clauses from the CBA to actually verify this information.

We had a whole thing a couple years ago where nobody was sure (including myself) what the waiver rules were during the times when the waiver period wasn't in effect.

But it's basically simple: no waiver period, no AHL assignments possible.

So if a player is waiver eligible, they must clear waivers to be assigned to an AHL roster.

Once they clear waivers, they are exempt for 10 games (played in NHL) or 30 days (on an NHL roster).

Once exemption limits are reached, a player's waivers status resets (and they become waiver eligible again).

Waivers are also reset after every season.

And we will be discussing all these rules repeatedly between now and opening night (as we do every summer when the training camps open and AHL assignments start happening). ;)

Thanks again Sid. That was very informative and insightful. You went above and beyond here. Guess its no secret why your positive reputation total is almost a thousand higher than your total posts.

May the hockey gods bestow a thousand more upon you.
