Report: Ex-Capitals exec George McPhee to be named Las Vegas GM http://thesco.re/29VBcHE

Las Vegas' NHL expansion team doesn't yet have a name, but its front office is coming together.

Former Washington Capitals executive George McPhee will be named general manager of the club by owner Bill Foley, according to multiplereports. The announcement will be made Wednesday at a 4 p.m. ET press conference at T-Mobile Arena.

"I can't comment right now," McPhee said Tuesday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Steve Carp.

McPhee turned 58 on July 2 and made his mark with the Capitals. He was general manager in D.C. from 1997 through 2014, winning seven division titles and making one Stanley Cup Final appearance. He served as a special advisor to New York Islanders GM Garth Snow in 2015-16.

In McPhee, Foley gets an experienced executive and general manager who over the years certainly made strong relationships throughout the league. The Vegas franchise will begin play in the 2017-18 season, and McPhee will now be tasked with putting together his club through what will undoubtedly be a fascinating expansion draft.

"I'd go to Iceland to (be a general manager again)," McPhee said after his time in Washington concluded, according to Carp. "Doesn't matter where it is."

Even better than Iceland: Las Vegas.

Other than his one big mistake at the end of his time in Washington he did a pretty good job over there. Naturally people just want to remember the Forsberg trade though.

It is part of his resume, you can't just discount certain actions when you want.

That is true but he has paid for that mistake with the loss of his job. Everyone makes mistakes and I bet he has learned from it.

Likely a league-appointed, flunky/crony to take on albatrosses from key US markets, when the league wants to play contract-trubs, shell game.

Now, where's the NEXT desert to "grow the game".

F*ckin league's takin' on a Kafkaesque-quality.

Wtf are you talking about??

In order to understand @Nuxfanabroad you have to be somewhat knowledgeable in English literature.

Look up Franz Kafka for your first hint, you will be glad you did!

SP,  Appreciate your replying on my behalf, but it could be this fellow & I have different views on the matter. At any rate, this summer-boredom is driving us all mad, I reckon! :^)

Great choice. For me it would be GM or DT.  I think as an executive GMGM is the best choice for a city like Vegas. Very experienced and capable choice.

I kinda wanted him to be our executive GM so i'm hoping we get DT instead. I think both teams win that way. A guy like

DT would be great as an executive GM for us while letting JB do all the nuts and bolts of building the team but i'm not sure TL and company would make such a drastic move.

Good choice by Vegas. DT would be a good choice as well. Both former Canucks btw.

Can't discount everything else he's done either that isn't as bad. Else you'd just end up a hypocrite really.

I think pretty much every experienced GM's made at least one bad mistake in their tenure.
