[Trade] OTT/NYR - Zibanejad for Brassard

Wow. I never thought brassard would still have this much value. I wouldn't have mind going after zibby. I like his play but not sure his size Kildare fill our big scoring winger wish list. How big is he?

Edit: 6'2" 222 lbs surprised benning didn't make a push for him. I guess we didn't have a brassard to give. I wouldn't have blinked to have traded Edler for him although I don't think ottawa was looking for a defensman.

This one's kind of a head scratcher..

It's a head scratcher from Ottawa's perspective, given they're a budget team. Mika is 5 years younger, cost controlled and they have his rights longer. Brassard is the better player currently, but he won't be for long. Great for the Rangers though. They clear cap, get younger and will have the better player very soon

What??

Zibanejad will be NYR's first line center for years to come now. Super young, has all the potential.

i didn't even know Brassard had that much value.

Rangers certainly talking up Zibanejad (who's coming into his own as a good player) but Z saves them almost half the cap of Brassard for this season. Zibanejad's RFA after this year though, with a number of other RFAs to sign but no real UFAs falling off until Nash the following season. They'll still have to make moves, but this delays it a bit.

Z will be getting a raise after this year, so perhaps they're thinking they couldn't afford him. With the way prices have been creeping up, they might be right. With Brassard they have three more seasons with him locked in at $5M.

But Rangers fans are seeing this as them losing a core/heart and soul guy for them to get a guy who's not as good yet but with the upgrade of a 2nd round pick. It's closer than that for them, but they're plenty upset. If this doesn't work out from a chemistry perspective for the Rangers, there will be hell to pay from the fans.

EDIT: also on the Ottawa budget point:

That said, I'm just checking out the twitter replies on the Sens release, and they aren't all that happy either. Usually means a good trade.

Comes down to the cap/$ perspective for both teams I guess.

Never thought Ottawa would need to add so much, Mika could easily become better than Derick in the next couple seasons. Rangers would've been in cap problems with Derick (apparently needed to re-sign Kreider and Hayes) but Ottawa helps them get out from under it by giving a solid young forward AND they gift them with a solid pick.

Feel like Ottawa got ripped off for what seems like a marginal upgrade at best.
