[Value of] Anders Lee

Recommended Posts

We all know Jim Benning is looking for a gritty winger who has scoring upside.  A lot of chatter has surround guys like Gabe Landeskog and Evander Kane, some high prolific names in the market, however I'd like to think they are at the top tier echelon of players of that ilk.

However, I believe Jim Benning is working the phones to find some hidden talents or guys that most people wouldn't bat an eye at much.

I feel Anders Lee could fit the mold JB and the Canucks are looking for to be competitive in the West.

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: Has great size for the the National Hockey League level at 6-3, 227 pounds, so he knows how to cycle effectively and maintain puck possession. Can score goals in bunches, too.
Flaws: Lacks game-to-game consistency. Needs to improve his play without the puck and in the defensive zone, in general. Must also use his body more effectively (and more often).
Career Potential: Big, complementary forward with a little upside.

YEAR TEAM LEAGUE GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG TOI S PTSPG
2015-16 NY Islanders NHL 80 15 21 36 -2 51 8 0 3 14:34 183 0.45

Why he fits:

- Anders can play the powerplay as a net front presence (where he scored 8 pp goals this season), we lack a net front presence

- He is 6'3'' 228 lbs, last two seasons he had 169/164 hits and is willing to drop the mits when need be (Our hits leader was Dorsett with 129), Lee can help in playing a gritty department that we lack in the middle six of our team

- Has proven he can score at this level, and with limited minutes as he played on average 14 mins this season.

- versatile at wing or at centre

- Still young at 26 years old, and has found his game at the NHL level.  No need to wait for what he may become.

Why to be concerned:

- Can score in bunches but can also disappear for stretches

- Isn't considered a defensive specialist, can play a two way game but is better suited in offensive zone

- coming off a fractured leg injury

--------------

He isn't a top flight player, but certainly can hold his own.

Considering that this team may not have the assets to chase after top tier players, we do have room and assets to move for players in a level down an echelon.

I think Anders Lee could be affordable.

Why?

Ladd- Tavares-Parenteau

Bailey-Nelson-Strome

Lee-Grabovski-Kulemin

Chimera-Czikas-Clutterbuck

The Islanders want to make room for the likes of Alan Quine who faired well in the playoffs, Shane Prince who also gave them some good scoring, and the likes of prospects Michael Dal Colle, and Matthew Barzal knocking on the door.  The Islanders still have to resign RFA Ryan Strome, and only have about 3.6 mil to sign him.

Could the Canucks provide some cap relief?

Lee is signed for another 3 seasons at 3.75 mil, is reasonable.

Next question would be, could the Canucks pry him from NYI for cheap?  and What would it take?

Any thoughts?

I think you're right that players like Lee is who JB is interested in.  My guess is with the Islanders roster situation which is getting pretty clogged up, they would probably want some sort of package to relieve that pressure (draft picks/prospects they can send down).

Congratulations! In my many years of posting on this site, this is is the first topic started in the proposals section that I have given a +1. I would be interested in players like Lee. As I have stated in other threads I dont believe Benning will trade the farm to fill a hole for one year. A player like Lee could be traded for now, and then traded away next year when our younger players step into the role.

Looking at Lee's salary he moves from 3.5 this year to 4 next and 5 the following year. At 26 yrs old he fits the group and who knows might be that next power forward ahead of Virtanen. I know it would hurt like hell but this is one I might dangle Hansen in front of them for the cap relief and see if it could be a 1 for 1 trade

Now that it's for sure that Pulock needs protection it looks like it will be impossible for NYIs to avoid losing a top player.  3 NMCs + 4FW/4D that are good enough to require protection.  They may protect Anders Lee, but probably not Brock Nelson.  Pulock and De Haan will probably be unprotected as well.

There's some really great opportunities with these young teams that have an over-abundance of good players coming up to the expansion draft.  They will want to get something (picks/prospects) rather than just let a good player get snatched for nothing.

Seriously? Nelson is 24 years old and scored 26 goals last year. Hard to believe they would let him go for nothing. Las Vegas would be all over him like white on rice.

Didn't say they would let him go for nothing; they would trade him before that happens.

Have a look at the roster.  With 3 NMCs, they are left with 5 skaters or 5FW and 2D.  They have a boatload of good young players and a few will be exposed to the draft.  They will definitely lose one of them (probably one of the dmen).

With their salary cap, I don't even know how they will sign Ryan Strome this year, let alone all those upcoming RFAs next year and the year after.  They certainly have to make a trade to pay for his big contract.

Fair enough, I do think Lee will get traded before Nelson does though, he is a core player IMO.

Hansen and Subban for Lee?

Hansen should be worth a 2nd round pick and Subban, a former 3rd rounder, has done well in junior and in the minors and is looking to take that next step into the big league. Maybe he has a late 2nd value, like how Vey did.

So two 2nd round picks (in Hansen and Subban) plus salary cap space plus one less young expansion elegible forward to protect. Decent value?

Yes please, sign me up!

He's got good hands in front of the net for redirects and for quickly corralling and throwing rebounds on net and I think he'd be a solid complement for the cerebral Twins.

As for price I'd think something like a 2 x 2nd would be comparable (I think Shaw and Lars Eller are similar, in that they contribute but aren't core guys, roughly what Lee is as a depth scoring player), but because he's put up higher points/ game he may cost a little more, maybe an additional non-blue-chip prospect?

You're probably right about Nelson, as he is a couple of years younger than Lee as well.  No matter...Lee would be a great addition to the Nucks.  Like his physical game as well as can score goals.  Plays LW/C and can put up some points.

So we are a slow team and you want to trade our fastest player who outworks everybody on the team every night for a guy with maybe more offensive upside who is very slow.  Not mention the larger contract.  I get going after Lee, but we are currently exposing Granlund, Sbisa and Rodin.  Adding another one doesn't help us.  The islanders are in the same boat not wanting to add an exposeable player.  In a non expansion year there is a trade here, but I just can't see it this year.

This was pretty much the first thing I thought of when reading this thread. Honestly though I'd rather just keep Hansen especially if the Sedins won't waive he's proven to be able to elevate their game to being a legit threat. Without Hansen their woefully without bite. Playing the Sedins alongside Hansen allows the Canucks to further build around Bo etc for the future. If the Sedins were willing to be traded we might have room to make a move for Lee.
