ItsMillerTime
On June 10th the NHL lost a legend. There was things to remember it by but not as good as it should be. Gordie Howe was a physical player. There is no awards for anything to due with physicality. So I thought why not have an award for the player who showed skill while having a physical side. For example guys like Ovechkin, Benn, Ladd. But maybe they have to be in the top 100 hits all season. I think its a good idea to represent the type of player Gordie Howe was. Sorry if there was any threads before I just had this pop into my mind. R.I.P Gordie Howe
SaintPatrick33
I like the idea, after all the legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard was properly given recognition in the goal scoring award. Perhaps the player who has the most Gordie Howe Hat tricks throughout the season (one goal, one assist and a fight?) I guess given the de-emphasis on fighting however, we will never see another tough player with skill like Mr. Howe. Maybe hits as you stated MillerTime, but the hits stat needs to be properly recorded, those Blues stats keepers are one of the worst at recording hits as Garrett has mentioned before. -AJ-
I actually like this idea. I think they'd also have to be careful not to commend dangerous hitting, but an award for clean but hard-nosed players who are also skilled would be cool.
IBatch
So we should have bad boy version of the Lady Byng award and name it after Howe? Love it! Jarome Iginla would have won ten of these awards by now. Elite skill and toughness?Elbowing ability - not sure of what the particulars would be but am pretty sure everyone would get the idea if it was named the Howe. Also they could simply rename the Hart the same way the Pearson was re-named the Lindsay award.
Toews
There are problems with this idea. Hits aren't recorded in the same manner in all arenas. Secondly just because a player is hitting someone doesn't mean that it is a productive play. In fact some of the top hitters are often players who are notoriously bad possession players or play for teams that don't have the puck very often. I just don't see the point of this award. 48MPHSlapShot
I dunno. With all of the talk about concussions and such these days, I doubt the NHL would want to garner any attention for promoting heavy hitting play, even if it is part of the game. Guest
It seems like the opposite of the Lady Byng Memorial trophy
Ojibwa72
I see it as essentially the ultimate power forward award. Play a 200' game, be able to throw the body cleanly, and have the scoring touch. The best complete all round player of the year.
Wilbur
I'd rather the NHL just rename the Hart trophy the Howe trophy. They did it with the Lindsay award.

But it likely won't happen =( - I think Gordie at some point will have a trophy named after him. Whether its a new one or renaming an old one. Keep it, but award it every year to the player who is on the ice for most unsuccessful power plays + most unsuccessful penalty kills + reversed value of their plus-minus.
