Shanahan tells a funny Sean Avery story

Last week, Maple Leafs President and NHL great, Brendan Shanahan, answered questions from hockey readers in an online piece for the Players Tribune. When asked to describe the "worst attempt at chirping" that he had every heard, Shanahan brought up a name that probably won't surprise a whole lot of hockey fans...Sean Avery. According to Shanahan, back when he was on the Red Wings, Avery once attempted to get in the ear of Joe Sakic, only to be stopped by another NHL Legend.

I remember when I was in Detroit, Sean Avery stood up as Joe Sakic was skating by our bench. Sean was a young, enthusiastic hockey player who was well liked by us old guys, and as you might know, was known for trash talking. But when he stood up and yelled, “Hey Sakic!” Brett Hull grabbed him by the back of his sweater and yanked him down on the bench. Then he said, and I'll never forget this, “You are not allowed to speak to Mr. Sakic.” And then Sean looked down the bench at the rest of the boys and we all just sort of nodded.

Hull probably negated a 5 goal game by Sakic, like that time Matt Cooke ( I think it was him) got in a fight with Jerome Iginla

Awesome story all the same.

That's the thing about players of that level, you don't want to wake them up if they're having a quiet game. Just leave them alone.

  • -SN- changed the title to Shanahan tells a funny Sean Avery story

Haha I find it funny that it was Brett Hull of all people to sit him down. Hull was a little puke in his own right. This is golden though. You never wanted to trash any star player, especially a legend like Sakic. It usually costs you a blowout when you do.

Funny he listened to Hull but completely disrespected another legend in Brodeur.

Not funny at all.

Exactly which respected vet on the Rangers at that time would have made sure his linemates were kept in line - Drury, yeah right?

Shanahan was on that Rangers team, as was Jagr. Both legends who command respect.

I wish other teams vets would talk to their punks about doing that to the Sedins

Sedins may not trash talk, but they are greasy players. I am huge fan and love them, but they are super greasy and get away with a lot. They are extremely penalized for a reason. They slue foot, hook, slash, etc...

Would really like to see video evidence of said 'greasy' play that wasn't provoked or simply self-preservation.

Are they complete choir boys - heck no.

Do they instigate and/or regularly seek out cheap shots against opponents - I would say absolutely not.

Look at their PIM and compare it to the other top 50 scorers in the NHL. The Sedins are greasy, it's why they get targeted.

He won't find any, or if he does it'll be one isolated clip taken out of context with no back story to explain the events that led up to whatever he says makes them so called 'greasy'.

If anything they may have given out a retaliatory shot here/there but they hardly make a living doing that. A few tripping or interface penalties a year is hardly cheap play.

You don't have to be dirty to be greasy.

Its not a conspiracy that they have been consistently the most penalized players in the top 50 scoring. They are lazy, the hook, they slut foot people in the corners to get a balance advantage. You don't have to take someone out to slue foot them.

You can call it greasy, I call it sticking up for themselves.

2014-15: H. Sedin (41st/50th)

2012-13: H. Sedin (23rd/50th)

2011-12: H. Sedin (12th/50th)

2010-11: H. Sedin (22nd/50th)

2009-10: H. Sedin (25th/50th)

Do some dang research before making stupid claims.

They are lazy,

Seriously, are you even watching the same players as the rest of us?
