10 things I bet you don´t know about Brazil...

in the joy and caos of RIO 2016 let´s embrace the Olympic spirit and know some wierd things about the country hosting the event...

1) THERE´S A DIFERENCE BETWEEN THE PORTUGUESE SPOKEN IN BRAZIL and THE PORTUGUESE SPOKEN IN PORTUGAL

and mainly is the accent and grammar. Brazilians speak faster than Portuguese people. since Brazil is a lot bigger than Portugal and during the 1500s it took almost 1 month to cross the atlantic ocean a native dialect was created. it´s called "Brazilian Portuguese" (Português Brasileiro)...

few examples:

word "fact"

FATO (Brazilian)

FACTO (Portugal)

word "float"

FLUTUA (Brazilian)

FLUCTUA (Portugal)

2) THAT GESTURE THAT PEOPLE DO WITH HANDS MEANING "OK"...

In Brazil means "go F$%&%% yourself"

3) MANY NAMES OF BRAZILIAN CITIES HAVE LITERAL TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH...

examples:

Porto Alegre: Happy Port

São Paulo: Saint Paul

Rio de Janeiro: January´s River

Salvador: Saviour

Recife: Reef

Fortaleza: Fortress

4) RIO DE JANEIRO WAS ONCE THE CAPITAL OF BRAZIL. AND A BRAND NEW ONE WAS BUILT DURING 1960...

yes. the new Capital of Brazil is Brasilia (basically means "Brazilian land")...

so if you´re from the year before 1969 congratulations! you´re older than the Capital of Brazil!

5) THAT BRASILIA ISN´T THE ONLY CITY IN BRAZIL BUILT ARTIFICIALLY?

Palmas and Boa Vista were also built artificially. the objective was developt certain regions of the country...

6) THAT A SINGLE PLANE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CREATION OF EMBRAER?

the small but brave EMB-110 was this plane. created in 1965 this non-pressurised 20 seat turboprop was responsible for the creation of the 3rd largest Aviation manufacturer in the world.

so the next time you fly an Air Canada´s ERJ-190  this was only possible thanks to this plane...

7) THAT EMBRAER MADE ONE OF THE FASTEST REGIONAL TURBOPROPS EVER?

the EMB-120 has the capacity of reach  552 km/h, 298 knots or 343 mph. only the SAAB 2000 was faster. not bad for a 30 seat airplane ;)

8) BRAZIL USE ETANOL AS FUEL FOR CARS. MOTORBIKES AND EVEN PLANES SINCE 1970...

when the Oil crisis hit the world during the 70s Brazil developed a brand new system of use Etanol as fuel. since our production of sugarcane is huge why not use it as fuel? the price per liter converted from BRL to US Dollar reaches US$1,00 per liter of etanol and most if not all cars produced in Brazil are "Flexfuel" meaning you can run your car with Gasoline, Etanol or even both at any mixture...

so it´s basically the oldest and cheaper biofuel program in the world. and works well too :)

the biggest buyer of Brazilian Etanol is USA, followed by Jamaica and El Salvador...

9) THAT THANKS TO MERCOSUL BRAZILIANS CAN VISIT ARGENTINA, URUGUAY, PARAGUAY and VENEZUELA JUST WITH THEIR IDs OR EVEN DRIVE LICENSES?

no need for Passport for a Mercosul citizen. wanna visit Buenos Aires? bring your drive license or ID with you. leave your passport at home. the procedure is so simple that it´s basically an updated domestic flight...

10) the drive license in Brazil is unified and also valid in many countries?

doesn´t matter if you took your exam in Rio or in Manaus. your drive license is basically an ID and also serve as an ID. so in order to avoid mistakes all drive licenses in Brazil have the same layout. contains the name of your dad and mom and also your social security number and other informations.

also you can drive with this license without need an internacional drive license in many countries suchas USA, Canada and European Union...

One thing I learned during the opening ceremony is that Brazil has the largest population of Japanese migrants anywhere in the world. Also that they contend that Brazil was the first country to invent build and fly an airplane.

more than you can imagine dude...

imagine what China is doing to Vancouver...

but with Japanese. but Japanese imigrants don´t talk louder and somehow they love this wierd country because they keep coming :)

about the planes yes we did the 1st powered flight. it´s our home and Americans can complain as much as they want. when they have another olympic at their home they can brag about the Wright brothers :)

Brasilia was designed from 0. it´s a city filled with modern designt and was planned like a lego city, everything fits precisely...

nice city to visit. but it´s hot, dry and sunny as hell. but still a nice place to see...
