[PTO] James Wisniewski with Lightning

Quote

James Wisniewski is getting a second chance.

The free-agent defenseman has signed a professional tryout contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail.

The 32-year-old played just 47 seconds in his first game in his lone campaign with the Carolina Hurricanes after suffering a severe knee injury that required season-ending surgery.

While he has not seen action in nearly a year, prior to last season, Wisniewski split time with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim Ducks and hit a career high of eight goals in 69 games. During the 2013-14 season, Wisniewski managed a career-best 51 points in 75 games.

With just six defensemen under contract heading into next season and Nikita Nesterov still without a contract, Wisniewski could prove to be a valuable depth option for the Lightning.

Wiz ALWAYS puts up points, I have no doubt that if he makes it onto the ice and a few PP's he'll put up 40pt, also rumored to be a great team guy and never backs down, "Push back" for miles.

Would have been a great PTO for us, considering the direction they are trying to take the team

as a PP specialist he would also have been a greet addition

Agreed. I would have loved to see Wiz come here on a PTO. I suppose however that he probably would have still chosen Tampa over Vancouver (and it's even possible JB did talk to his agent about a tryout).

In all honesty, I'd still be open to signing Wisniewski to a modest contract if he can show that can still skate. The talent isn't an issue. He's potentially a better OFD/PPQB than anyone we have coming to our camp. The question is how far he's come in his rehab and how much his mobility has been set back by injury.

But most of those questions could probably be answered by watching him skate through his first few drills at camp.

Might still be a guy worth circling back to if Larsen has a poor preseason showing and doesn't look ready for the NHL (at least in the role JB hopes Larsen can fill).

Maybe one of our pro scouts should go on a little "Florida vacation" when camp opens?

I just puked in my mouth.  None of what you said is true.

Why is this sad?

He played roughly double the length of time of the average NHL career.

And showed himself to be at least as dirty as Matt Cooke.  And openly talked about translating his points into a "home run" contract, then watched his career go into the toilet.  You suck Wizniewski.  Have fun in Germany.
