[PTO] Gabriel Bourque with Avalanche

No, but Gabriel Bourque just got a PTO, as per the thread title not associated with Boyes.

I know, but there's a lot of guys, Boyes included - Kris Russell too - who you'd think would have PTOs before guys like Bissonette or Torres. Maybe not Bourque.

I mean, this is a good move for Colorado, but it's weird to see some historically decent players passed over.

Unfortunately, for guys like Boyes and Russell, they're in the price range and talent range where GMs are trying to distance themselves from. Not good enough to be given $5M/year, but too much to give $3M when they could potentially be replaced by someone on an ELC.

In Boyes' case, not reliable enough to hand out that contract to. In Russell's case, not dynamic enough to warrant more than he wants. Doesn't mean they aren't good. However, GM would rather maximize profits as much as possible with a cheaper player. Keep in mind, while typically all the fans care about seeing is the on ice product, the GMs also have to answer for how profitable the team is.

If Bourque, who is a 3rd liner when healthy, can be had (if gets a job due to PTO) for $700k(ish), why would you pay Boyes, who would likely be a 2nd/3rd liner for 3x as much?

That's entirely fair. It's just... weird, that's all. :P

Couldn't agree more.

Was disappointed when Versteeg didn't get a deal, and instead, signed overseas. Sad day when when guys in their late 20s/early 30s have difficulty getting NHL jobs.

***Looks up Boyes' age***

'ikes! The guy is turning 35 this upcoming season. Well, looks like he's just about done.

Not a chance Boyes is looking for a contract more than a million at this point in his career. He's probably just looking for an NHL contract, maybe 750k at most. Teams aren't interested in him because of his age. He's basically like Chris Higgins and should try to get a PTO or look for work in Europe.

As for Russell, he's probably asking for more than what teams are willing to pay for a smallish dman. He should get no more than 3.5 million for maybe 2 or 3 years at best unless teams are desperate for dmen.

I don't think Bourque will get a full time NHL roster spot, but worth giving a PTO for a 25 year old who could be an energy guy in the bottom 6.

"Hi, Brad! Very nice of you to grace us with your presence and let us know what you're contract expectations are."
