Players who should be in the HHOF, but aren't

Hey guys

Thought it'd be fun to see who everyone's list of players are that aren't in the HHOF, but should be. Here are mine

1. Pierre Turgeon- 500+ goals and 1300+ points, as consistent as they come, Turgeon was a good player for a long time for several different teams. Why his name is never brought up in the HHOF discussion I'll never understand.

2. Sergei Zubov- Great offensive presence from the blueline in the 90s and 2000s, not a coincidence that all the teams he played for were pretty good. Led the Cup champion '93-'94 Rangers in scoring in the regular season, was more than a PPG player for one year in Pittsburgh, then became Dallas' greatest defenseman in franchise history. Definitely belongs in the hall.

3, Theo Fleury- Overcame all kinds of odds for a 400+ goal, 1000 pt career. More than a PPG in his career and was one of the league's top stars until his personal problems de-railed him. His overcoming those problems definitely make him a great choice for the hall.

4. Paul Kariya- For that stretch between 1996 and 1999, I don't think there was a better player than Paul Kariya on the planet, except maybe Jaromir Jagr. Kariya, despite a bit of a lack of size, was an absolute offensive machine in his heyday with the Ducks, with blistering speed and a wicked shot, not to mention his playmaking and puck skills. Averaged a PPG for his career.

5. Vincent Damphousse- Great stats, highly underrated. Can't believe the Leafs gave this guy up for Glenn Anderson.

Who are your guys' picks?

Pierre Turgeon will most likely be inducted in the next few years.  And rightfully so.

A few other guys who will get their induction (hopefully) soon are:

Mark Recchi (though people here will not like it)

Rod Brind'Amour

Pat Verbeek

Dave Andreychuk

Followed by the Sedins in the next 10 years

Some names that haven't been mentioned, but are worth mentioning as a candidate:

  • Daniel Alfredsson
  • Jean-Sebastien Giguere
  • Curtis Joseph
  • Ed Jovanovski
  • Tomas Kaberle
  • Nikolai Khabibulin
  • Saku Koivu
  • Alexander Mogilny
  • Chris Osgood
  • Jeremy Roenick
  • Teemu Selanne
  • Ryan Smyth
  • Tim Thomas
  • Ray Whitney

Don't people have to be retired for a couple years before being nominated?

Yes, the standard is three years although there have been exceptions - Gretzky the most notable (straight to the Hall).

Jagr should be the next.

Osgood would be my pick of the bunch of fringe players (not including Selanne for obvious reasons).  Kaberle, Khabulin, Koivu, Smyth, Giguere and Jovanovksi won't likely ever make it in.  Mogilny, Roenick, Joseph and Alfredsson have decent chances.

For first-time nominees, it takes a lot longer for them to become a Hall of Famer. Some of them will eventually become one, but it will take years.

I think Alfredsson and Selanne as soon as they are eligible, will make it in.

Osgood came to mind instantly, but he might have to wait a while.

Hard to ignore Rechi..will get in for sure

Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin and Thornton (nobody has scored more points in this league since he joined it)   are locks when they retire.

The only name I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet is Mike Vernon. 385 wins, 2 cups, and a Conn Smythe. If Grant Fuhr can get in the hall mainly on the success of playing on the Oilers dynasty then Vernon should've been inducted a long time ago.

Osgood has never got much respect. When they won it seemed to be like the media suggested he wasn't part of it, that they won is spite of him.

Yet look at this, guy should already be in, my guess he's one of those players that will always be overlooked

  • Member of the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings – 1997, 1998, 2008 (starting goaltender in 1998 and 2008)
  • 2 time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy (shared with Mike Vernon – 1996), (shared with Dominik Hasek – 2008)
  • Is currently 10th all-time in wins by an NHL goaltender
  • Is currently 8th in all-time playoff wins
  • Is currently 4th in all-time playoff shut-outs
  • Played in
  • Named to the 1997 NHL All-Star Game but was unable to attend because of an injury.
  • Named to NHL Second All-Star Team after 1995–96 season
  • Named to WHL East Second All-Star Team after 1990–91 season
  • Led NHL in GAA in 2008 (regular season 2.09 & playoffs 1.55)
  • Led NHL in Wins in 1996
  • Scored a goal vs. Hartford Whalers, March 6, 1996.
  • First goaltender since Terry Sawchuk to win Stanley Cups ten years or more apart as a starter (Sawchuk in 1955 and 1967)
  • Became only the 10th goaltender in NHL history to achieve 400 wins on Dec 27th 2010 in a 4–3 overtime win against the Colorado Avalanche
  • 4th all time NHL leader in win percentage (53.9%)

Yes and add his winning percentage to that and it almost seems insane his name isn't on the first ballot every year till he's in...I would have put him in the Hall before all of last years inductees (and last year was not a bumper year, rather one too add some guys who have been waiting a while..Lindros could wait longer that is for sure).

Very good players, but Teemu Selanne is the only sure-fire hall of famer. He will be inducted. Of the rest, Mogilny, Roenick, Alfredsson and Joseph should get consideration but would not be surprised if they didn't get in.

Daniel Alfredsson                                makes it after 2 or 3  tries

  • Jean-Sebastien Giguere             nope, not enough great years
  • Curtis Joseph                              played in Toronto thus makes it
  • Ed Jovanovski                             nope
  • Tomas Kaberle                            see Curtis Joseph
  • Nikolai Khabibulin                        nope- but a damn fine goalie for a few years
  • Saku Koivu                                   played in Montreal, feel good story as a cancer survivor(so far), had a few great years makes it after 2-3 tries
  • Alexander Mogilny                         huge point/goal getter for a good number of years,  gets in after 1; or 2 tries due to fighting Russian bias.
  • Chris Osgood                               Should be in by now
  • Jeremy Roenick                           3-4 tries
  • Teemu Selanne                           either the best or second best to ever come from Finland- and that country grows damn fine players 1 st ballot player
  • Ryan Smyth                                 nope, not enough playoff experience
  • Tim Thomas                                 nope- too much nutbar, even for a goalie
  • Ray Whitney                                a good player for a lot of years, lifetime achievement award 4-6 tries

I agree. Selanne should be a shoe in. Alfredsson might take a couple tries.

What about St. Lious....when his grace period is up that is....

I say yes for sure.  He's somewhere between Tim Thomas and Hasek for breaking into the league...and he got the ice time ran with it until his ice time became an issue and he retired (somewhat unwillingly).  And one of the oldest guys ever to get the type of points he did, amazing athlete - like Howes best season at 40.  Selanne did that too a little.  Stamkos's production dived 20% after he lost his gifted passer....good thing they have Drouin in the wings.
