One of the many reasons we got Gudbranson ::D

Yup. Thank you Huberdeau.

Seems in line with what I'd expect. He's taken a bit to come into his own but is on the right trajectory to be good value by the end of this deal.

$$$$$$$$$$$$

They'll have 18 million in cap space next summer.

Add Ekblad's 6.5 million dollar raise, Huberdeau's 2.5 million dollar raise, and Smith's 1.6 million dollar raise, and they still have like 7 million dollars in cap space.

They could have kept Gudbranson if they really wanted to. Especially if they didn't go out and get a 4 million dollar backup, or sign Demers to a 5 year contract. This trade was about analytics and what they think Gudbranson's value to the team was. It's fine by me they didn't want him though.

You need to ask yourself if Florida is a cap team?

Gudbranson is due a significant pay raise, and with all of Florida's other young guys they need the cap flexibility

I don't know how significant it will be when you look at his comparables.

They had enough money to go out and sign Demers to a 5 year contract at around the same value Gudbranson will likely get. This was more about them not seeing his value IMO.

They would be spending the same amount of money whether they were giving 4.5 mil to Gudbranson or to Demers.

This wasn't about money, it was about how they valued Gudbranson.

Gotta agree with @DeNiro on this one. It wasn't a matter of the overpayment Guddy's agent was and is probably requesting. They could have easily paid for it instead of Demers or Reimer... still baffled at the Reimer deal lol. They got a solid trade and managed to land a terrific prospect and upgraded a draft pick.

I will cause it's the truth. ;)

You really think that it was a coincidence that the Panthers promoted an analytics guy, and then not long after they traded a player with poor underlying numbers?

*Doesn't actually have poor underlying numbers.

I think they traded him as they felt Petrovic can play 2nd pair right side and they didn't want to pay him $5m+ when they had numerous other guys to also give raises to. There's a reason they wanted a return on a 2way ELC and it's green with president's faces on it.

He does actually have poor numbers in certain categories, which they may have valued higher than others. It was more due to how he was deployed though, which I don't know if they even took into account.

Again, they had the cap to go out and get Demers and Reimer, it was not about having a lack of cap space. Gudbranson is looking to make around 4.5 million based on all his comparables unless he has a big increase in point production (which I doubt).

This was about them wanting to acquire certain players. Players that drive the possession numbers and play good transitional hockey. They clearly didn't think Gudbranson fit in with what they were building.

Their loss is our gain.

They also had Campbell and Mitchell's salaries coming off FWIW.
