[Report] George Parros joins Department of Player Safety

Former NHL enforcer George Parros has joined the league's Department of Player Safety and will serve as part of the core group that handles disciplinary decisions, it was announced Wednesday.

"I am very pleased that George is joining us and excited about what he will bring to our department," said Player Safety head Stephane Quintal. "While he was widely known as a physical player, his coaches, teammates, and opponents also knew him as a student of the game.

"He will add another unique perspective to our group and the fact that he only recently retired means that he has a keen understanding of today's game."

Parros, who announced his retirement back in 2014, appeared in 474 games after being drafted in the eighth round by Los Angeles at the 1999 NHL Draft, amassing 18 goals, 18 assists, and 1,092 penalty minutes.

"It's an interesting opportunity to not only watch a lot of hockey and remain in the sport, but kind of affect what's going on in the sport in a way that things move forward," Parros said.

"You're trying educate the players, and the thing that best suits me for the job is that I've played the game for a long time and played as physical as anybody else, perhaps more so, and never once got fined or suspended."

The Princeton University graduate won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007.

He's smart, Harvard law I believe? That said, I continue to find irony in player safety when they hire some of the biggest goons who have ever played in Shanahan, Pronger, and now Parros. Wouldn't it make more sense to hire the afflicted as opposed to the bullies? But I guess it's the goons that still have normal brain function after hockey.

It says right in the quoted article Princeton, and goons isn't quite the right description for Shanahan and Pronger but they definitely used every available option to them which meant a lot of dirty play so I agree on a mix of different players. Those guys definitely know the tricks more than if they appointed a Lady Byng winner to the group, so as long as they aren't overlooking things because they used to play that way then they'll be able to spot things someone else might miss.

Yes, I believe you are right about Harvard.

I think you need a mix of players for this department, as you gain knowledge from the many perspectives. I just hope for more consistency down the road.

P.S. If you are still reading this Elvis, I know it was Princeton, but I wanted to irk you a little bit :P

Only scored 1250 on his SAT?

An economics major at Princeton University, Parros believes if he wasn't a professional hockey player he'd be a business consultant or a stock trader. He also scored a 1250 on his SATs and is an avid crossword junkie.

Wow not gonna lie, a 1250 is pretty bad...

EDIT: Unless it was out of 1600

I guess it's possible they didn't look at the writing section if he wanted to study economics. If that's the case, 1250 is actually really good

Yep, which would be out of 1600. Although I wouldn't say a 1250 out of 1600 isn't considered REALLY good, especially for Princeton. Definitely a little above average though.

EDIT: George still seems like a smart guy though.

Solid choice imo. Great personality from what I've seen on hockey wives hahaha

He's 1/10th of the scum shanahan and pronged are or were. Even though he was a "goon" he was a clean player. Not like those two disgusting pigs.

I was just thinking it would extraploate to 1875 out of 2400. Sure, not unheard of but very solid- especially for a student athlete.

Your definition of "goon" is off if it includes two HOFers.
