BCNate
Just a thought in hopes of sparking a conversation. If the Canucks win the draft lottery, who would you take with the #1 pick? I would think that the consensus at this point would be between Nolan patrick and Timothy Liljegren, but feel free to add anyone else. Here are Craig Button's Reviews: 1. Nolan Patrick: A foundation centre. Makes everybody around him better and excels in all areas of the game. Exceptionally smart with a thorough understanding of what is necessary at any given moment in any given situation. High skill with an ease to his play and while he may not 'catch' your eye with flash, he plays with the substance of fellow Manitoban Jonathan Toews. 2. Timothy Liljegren: Elite defenceman who can impact the game everywhere on the ice. Smarts and vision that is reserved for the very few. Outstanding skater in every regard and uses it to gain advantages defensively and offensively. Puck play is excellent and can thread the needle with a pass or a shot. Has a game reminiscent of Drew Doughty with a splash of Erik Karlsson. While both would be excellent players for the Canucks, and both fill a void, I would be inclined to take Liljegren. I would do this for the following reasons: 1> I see us picking in the top 10-20 in the next few drafts, where we should be able to find some elite scoring forwards. The likelihood of getting an elite d prospect in this range is much lower. 2> In 2-3 years, when we are moving out of the Re-tool phase, our under 30 year old d core would be Joulevi, Liljegren, Tanev, Gudbranson, Hutton. We also have a number of reasonable prospects in Larsen, Pedan, Subban, Stecher, Tryamkin who may develop. We would also have Markstrom and Demko in goal. I would say that we would be very strong defensively and in goal, with some offensive potential coming from the D. 3> We can fill out our forwards with trades and UFA's at a much lower cost. Our first line would be concern, which would need to be sorted out. If we did have to move Dmen such a s Edler, Sbisa, or 1 of the new core, or Markstrom we would be dealing from a position of strength.
saucypass
We still have no #1 centre. I'm going to have to go with Nolan Patrick on this one. Although we don't have a #1 defenseman, we have a pretty strong core with Juolevi being a wildcard to evolve into a #1 defenseman.

Jaku
Nolan Patrick. Canucks don't have a true #1 Center prospect and I think Patrick will be that. 10 minutes ago, BCNate said: Where do you rank Patrick amongst: McDavid Eichel Matthews Dubois Draisaitl Bennett Reinhart Strome What type of player do you project him to be? I first of all wouldn't have Dubois on that list. I personally don't believe he is or will be a top line Center. But I think Patrick can be in the mix with players like Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett. Warhippy
Before people jump in with Patrick Have you seen the Swede play? Like actually watched more than 45 seconds of highlights? I say this as I immediately slap links and clips of highlights about him. But seriously... http://www.tsn.ca/get-to-know-them-patrick-liljegren-in-2017-1.389307 http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=224910 http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1977009 http://thehockeywriters.com/top-5-prospects-for-the-2017-nhl-draft/ I honestly think that while Patrick projects to be a solid center, he might be a solid center the same way RNH is a solid center. Just with more size. But this kid...not only is he ugly as puck, but he skates like Karlsson but plays like Neidermeyer. At 16.8 years old

At 16.8 years old I agree with you and Jaku that Patrick will be a Reinhart/Bennett/RNH type player, which we certainly need, but Liljegren looks like he has the potential to be the Franchise altering type of defenseman. He would give us one of the youngest, most talented D cores in the league, that would be the backbone of this team for the next decade.

I just think , if we have that pick at #1 take the forward right...or trade down and take that D man. Having a potential #1 in Juolevi is awesome, but having two potential #1's in Liljegren and Juolevi would be absolutely beastly.
BabychStache
Somehow the Canucks will pick at 4.

I'd prefer the playoffs no doubt but argh, Liljegren would give us the best defense in the league for the next 10+ years.

N4ZZY
I think between the centre and the defenseman. You have to go with the dman in this one. Lilgegren seems like he will be a number 1 defenseman. I think management needs to take him, especially considering that this franchise has never had a true number one defenseman. We have an opportunity, perhaps, depending on how this season goes, to draft a franchise dman, and we pass? Even after this coming draft, the Canucks will need to add a number one centreman, so the rebuild...I mean, retool, is still underway even if the Canucks draft Lilgegren. Horvat could potentially become that number 1 centreman. But he seems more likely to be a number 2.

So say Juolevi and Liljegren for 12-15 years a piece, trade one of them in his near Mid 30's chara-esque stature for a 1st round pick, top prospect and roster player to a desperate bubble team. Start the process over again.

billabong
If liljegren has Patrick's size than he would be a no brainer, but I need to see more tape of each of them. The WJC's are the best place to show case these two
brownky
I'm not sure this thread is necessary since we're going to be drafting 30th overall this year, and all that entails. We're going to win the cup. Or We're going to swap picks with the eventual cup winner for somebody who is real good team guy, brings his meat and potatoes attitude and works hard.
