(Discussion) Value of Sebastain Aho

Recommended Posts

Aho is a prospect I really like and I was wondering what people think it would take to pry him from Carolina. I feel like Carolina is the most isolated franchise on planet earth, I have no idea what they are up too. What kind of packages would you offer for this player? or maybe a similar player on another team to compare him with value wise. Aho is a really fun player too watch, has serious creativity and could be Top 6 C with Horvat once Hank hangs em up. Or possibly a scoring/playmaking LW for the future. Who knows, I just like his raw talent and offensive prowess, something the Canucks dont have a ton of.

Thoughts? Criticism?

If you don't know what Carolina is doing, then you aren't paying attention. They are slowly building a future contender.

They have possibly the best collection of young D-men in the league (Hanifin, Faulk, Fleury, Slavin, McKeown, Pesce, Carrick...). They have one of the top goalie prospects in Nedeljkovic. And they are starting to amass some exciting young talent up front too (Lindholm, Rask, Teravainen, Aho, Saarela, Zykov, Roy, McGinn...).

The only reason they'd even consider trading Aho is if they either questioned his ability in some way, or used him to acquire a player they thought was even better.

Aho was overshadowed by Laine and Puljujvari(hardest player to spell in the universe)...but only by his size.  This guy was just as good though.  Most fantasy mags have this guy pegged at around 40-50 points this year as a rookie, his smooth skating and sublime passing and shot should translate into a good NHL career, and a future 1st line winger for us.  When watching the juniors this year his play impressed - a lot.  And then he played like a seasoned pro in the worlds and I started to think "how can we get this guy? too"...

We would have to give up Olli Juolevi...and possibly a pick to go with it (given Aho is expected to join the NHL this year).  Or Demko and a pick (Lack sure didn't impress..Benning is starting to look pretty good on that one - and to think of the amount of butthurting that was on the CDC at the time - makes me laugh, Markstrom played WAY better than he did).  Could take as much as a Hutton or Tanev if Carolina feels that he is important enough to their future.

Personally I would consider any combination of forward trades with the exception of Horvat (too important to our future) and the Sedins.  Don't think we should bother trading our D away for this guy, we need them too much, but if it means Aho is joining our team it could be a good thing - reminds me of Kane when he entered the league...

Aho is a guy im looking to draft in my keeper league, so I hope the Canucks don't trade for him,

Har har....suppose Aho would get more ice time in Carolina with an aging J. Staal running their offense.  But then again in two seasons 2/3 of the first line in Vancouver is going to be up for a change....are you suggesting Aho would get more points for your team than Vancouver?  He would shoot pretty fast up to second or first line duties as a right winger....and get along with either the twins or Horvat/Sutter right away.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think I would do Demko and 3rd for Aho. However, I don't have a soft spot for goalies. I would rather this team rolled with Markstrom and added potential top end talents up front . This team needs a game breaking offensive talent and to get you must give.

Aho-Horvat-Boeser/Virtanen

Juolevi-Guddy/Tanev

In my opinion that looks eerily simlar too Chicago's winning combo of

Kane-Toews-Sharp/Hossa

Keith-Seabrook/Hjalmarson

Obviously not as a good (yet, maybe never) but the playing styles and "potentials"  are there.

I do the 3rd but they probably ask for a 2nd, so there might need to be some tinkering with that. If they weren't interested in a Goalie, then I would try to sell them on Edler/Sbisa/Hansen/Baer + 2nd + prospect (gaunce, brisebois)

I could see it happening, with a little overpayment from us, and positional need on Carolinas part. He seems like type of prospect that could really rack up the points, and now might be the cheapest time too buy.

I apologize if this is all over the place

No worries, I am sure if Benning went after this guy it would be all over the place with him trying to get him onboard.  CAR likely covets this guy, but goaltending is one area they need to shore up.  This might work.

Remember Gartieg was hotly pursued as well. Garteig + might work as well.
