Virtanen top winger 2018

I do believe Virtanen is the dark horse coming into this season. At 18 he wasn't ready. His stats are good he has great speed. I feel he is a 30 plus goal guy within 2 years all the while throwing great hits and getting into the corners like a real power forward. If he gets to be half of what he should be we have a top line power forward every team dreams about. I hope he is working hard to get there. We will see soon.

Virtanen was 19 last year and you seriously need to have more substance than this to create a new thread. This post could have gone in the Virtanen thread. Now you have made me go all Elvis on you.

Chill. He's new. Not that big of a deal.

The good thing is that Boeser and Virtanen should push eachother to be as good as possible. Boeser in my eyes plays like Oshie where as Virtanen has a more unique skill set somewhere between Carter, Lucic, and Doan.

Carter had 42 points in his 20-21 aged year

Lucic had 42 points in his 20-21 aged year

Doan had 11 points in 33 NHL games at 20-21 and 42 points in 39 NHL games

Seeing Virtanen hit a 30 to 40 point pace this year would be a very nice indicator of his ceiling being a top line forward.

Opportunity to play PP, and with offensive players, and role effects points too though, right?

Welcome to the forum, don't let mini mods get you down

I believe Virt doesn't have the hockey IQ to be an elite forward but I do think he'll be a Raffi Torres (skill and hits, not suspensions) Not the best scenario for a sixth overall pick but still a good NHL player that's nice to have if you are contending.

Well, your opinion is yours, but JV has hockey IQ that is extremely high, for the role he plays.

Sure, if we redefine what hockey IQ is he can have as much as we want but in normal use of the term of high IQ he's just not one of those guys. Being able to line up a hit and shoot hard isn't enough, it's how you use your linemates and see the ice and predict how the play is going to change anywhere on the ice.

I'm not saying he's at Sestito levels of low IQ or anything, just that Virt will always be one of those guys that never turns his toolset into something truly elite (and it's extremely rare to do so) big guys with high IQ are Jamie Benn. Virt is not one of those or has never shown an potential to be.

I'm sure there are those that think I am insulting the kid or calling him a bust but he's one of the few people on the team I would consider untouchable except for a massive overpayment. Giving up on big guys that can shoot and hit and skate is like giving up on a pitcher that throws 96 mph. I just put him as a Raffi to slightly better Raffi and not a SeaBass when he peaks.

Be happy to be wrong in the end and he's a consistent Bertuzzi for more then the small time Bert was Bert but even when the Isle gave up on him you could see bert had the high IQ that Virt doesn't. So I'll keep my expectations at a bigger Raffi Torres and be pleasantly surprised if he becomes something more.

I like the Torres comparison. I would be okay if he played like Raffi in his prime for a number of years. You definitely need those north south players just like you've stated. However I think Virtanens shot and speed is a lot better than Raffi's. If he can learn to be more of a trigger man or net front presence, we'll see Jakes point totals go up. He's clearly not a cycle or possession player. We'll count on him to skate it in and either shoot, drive to the net, or dump it. If he can learn to park that big butt in front of the net and clean up the garbage I think that's where he'll find his service best rewarded.
