While Shawn Horcoff is hanging up his skates, he won't be out of work.

The former Anaheim Ducks forward is the Detroit Red Wings' new director of player development, the Red Wings confirmed Friday.

Horcoff contributed six goals and 15 points in 59 games with the Ducks last season. He concludes his NHL career with 186 goals and 511 points in 1,008 games.

He was on the ice for the derek stepan blunder wasn't he? I can't recall if it was him or Smyth... or maybe both.

Surprised the Coilers didn't offer him a job... poor guy has to live in that dump Michigan... that being said I'm sure he's not living in flint, probably a nicer part of it.

Strange,  Detroit always struck me as the type of organization where both players and management types had to pay their dues.

Hiring Horcoff straight to this position seems out of the norm for Detroit.

Well, he did play in Edmonton for a while, meaning he's been helping develop players for real NHL teams for years.

There has to be some intermediate steps. You can't just go to be the head of player development.

Why not? Shanahan went from player straight to the NHL's VP of Hockey & Business Development.

People really don't seem to understand...the NHL & NHL teams are private enterprises. They can hire whoever they want to do whatever they want.
