Kinsella dies Quote W.P. Kinsella, the B.C.-based author of "Shoeless Joe," the award-winning novel that became the film "Field of Dreams," has died at 81. His literary agency confirms the writer, who was born in Edmonton, had a doctor-assisted death on Friday in Hope, B.C. The agency did not provide details about Kinsella's illness, but said he has asked not to have a memorial service. Kinsella published almost 30 books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and was a winner of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. His 1982 magic-realist novel "Shoeless Joe," about a farmer who hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field, was adapted into the popular Kevin Costner film "Field of Dreams." Coincidentally I was in Hope on Friday. If I'd only known I could have done....well, nothing.

Cerridwen
Several years ago, on a boring, winter Sunday morning with nothing on television save the Coronation Street 3 hour weekly catch up....I stumbled upon a series called The Rez on APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for those who don't watch channels that high). I was immediately hooked on the comedic adventures of teenagers and families living on the rez....Silas Ermineskin, Sadie Maracle, Frank Fencepost, Mad Etta et al. Every Sunday morning I was up early to watch this hilarious half hour program......and then one morning, I actually watched the credits only to discover that the series was based on novels/short stories by W. P. Kinsella, an author I only knew as 'Canadian' and therefore to be avoided at all costs in the like of Margaret Atwood, Margaret Laurence etc. During this same time period, I also saw the full length movie Dance Me Outside and that movie sent me to the library to read every Kinsella book I could get my hands on........the books on which all the characters of The Rez were based upon in particular prompted me to buy my own copies of them...... The Fencepost Chronicles, The Moccasin Telegraph and Other Stories, The Miss Hobbema Pageant, Dance Me Outside, Scars, Born Indian and Brother Frank's Gospel Hour. To be honest, the baseball books never interested me much... the books by which I believe most people know his work. The passing of W. P. Kinsella yesterday has prompted me to pull out these books again for a re-read,....to lose myself in laughter at the antics of Frank, Silas, Joseph, Sadie, Mad Etta, Lucy and the characters on The Rez. To do so is to pay honour to a great Canadian talent who has left us.... RIP, Mr. Kinsella, and thank you for the laughter and lightness to be found within the covers of your books. tldr - RIP W. P. Kinsella

smithers joe
in his book, the iowa baseball confederacy, his hero, finds a glitch in time and enters into another time long past...the way he describes the surroundings and the happenings, he makes you feel, that you've been there before. weird feeling.
