Nuxfanabroad
This is derived from a thread I see being discussed on HFBoards. Feel it leads to pretty interesting views/angles, after what went down. Namely: - Subban/Weber - Hall/Larson (Edm wouldn't have done this, had they sent a huge package for Subban) Don't know if anyone has heard anything concrete, but apparently for PK Subban, Edm was close to sending: Draisatl, Klefbom AND their #4 overall. When it became apparent Dubois was going to CBJ, apparently Bergevin was less interested in Edm's offer. If true, is he kicking himself, at this point? If it's a fact, I'd imagine Habs fans crying in their beers, about now. This puts Weber in a fairly tough position. Not only will he be compared directly to Subban; it appears his performance might also be critically viewed by Habs-backers, lined up with what mighta' been, had they landed a cheaper, deeper package, with possibly 3 astounding young Oiler pieces. The Oil have been criticized by many over the Hall deal. Ultimately the deal they couldn't pull off might leave them as the deepest young collection of talent one could imagine. cripplereh
well now for the habs that is to bad they would have had a way better deal, but who knows if this is true or not plus if it is it never happened so what!!!
Nuxfanabroad
If Edm dealt directly with Poile(for Weber), curious what they might have offered? They likely felt Subban's age lined up better with their young fwds, yet Weber's cap-hit is almost 2 mill cheaper. Could Nashville have landed, Drai/Hall, Klefbom + the #4 OA pick? IMHO, this would have made more sense for what they need, instead of Subban.
Phil_314
Any reputable insiders to quote for this topic? Frankly it might go the way of "us getting Hedman for Bieksa, Burrows and 1st" or about how we would've gotten much more than just Bo for Schneider if there's no substantial proof for these rumors (e.g. Leon, Klefbom AND 4th is a humongous offer). Nuxfanabroad
^ Sorry Phil, it's likely lots of "He said, she said"..That said, there's no disputin' Mtl & Edm were hot & heavy with proposals & whispers last draft-wknd. Wonder if Poile chimed in with any calls, at that time?
luckylager
Bergavin turned down that package for PK? I dunno man... I could see Chiarelli offering that package for PK and the Habs 1st, but then again.. the Hall trade? What in the ..? Chiarelli and Bergavin both have severe brain damage if that rumour is true- One for the offer, one for the decline.
HC20.0
If Montreal turned that down, Bergevin should be shot. 1st line forward, top 4 D, PLUS Puljujarvi for an overpaid PK Subban. How could Montreal not take that? Just because Dubois was coveted by CBJ? If true, then I'm just baffled.
timberz21
I thought it was said when Montreal asked Draisaitl Edmonton walked away. They weren't packaging him plus the 4th. I don't think the Habs would have walked away because they were losing Dubois. I know he was their target, but I can't imagine the Habs being disappointed with Puljujarvi+Draisaitl+more? mll
It's Edmonton that did not want to give up Draisaitl according to Friedman. Draisaitl and McDavid are the untouchables in Edmonton. Nashville was not looking to move Weber. It was only because it was Subban - Poile has really insisted on that. Both players fit better with their new teams because of how each team wants to play. Nashville wants to attack as a 5-men unit. They want their Ds to be able to cycle with their Fs in the o-zone. Also Weber does not carry the puck and, in the playoffs, teams were just focusing on Josi - forcing him to make a pass instead of carrying the puck in. They know that they won't be as solid defensively without Weber but they believe they will be spending more time in the opponents zone. In Montreal - they don't want the Ds to skate the puck but pass it as quickly as possible to the Fs even if it means dumping it in. Subban slows the game down too much because he wants to skate the puck. He is also too unpredictable and takes too much risks for how they want to play. Sygvard
I have read a few times that talks between Edmonton and Montreal never got very far, due to Edmonton being wary of Subban's contract. They are aware that McDavid will eventually be one of the largest contracts in the NHL. Apparently they balked at the prospect of being committed to multiple players in that 9 million range. Especially considering a large ask from Montreal, it never got off the ground.
PhillipBlunt
I'm sure glad that Weber didn't end up in Edmonton. Having to contend with him and Lucic so many times per year would have been a headache for the Canucks. Having to just deal with Lucic calling out to McDavid to slow down so that he can "catch up" is far more palatable.

IBatch
From what I understand Subban's personality just wasn't what the habs wanted in their dressing room (too big, to the point of distraction). They got exactly what they wanted in Weber. Criticism for the trade is mostly based on the age difference, at this exact point in their careers its splitting hairs trying to figure out who is the better defenseman, they both bring offense and possession to the table, one hits harder and clears the net better, the other skates with the puck better and has a higher offensive ceiling (and a Norris to his name, although Weber is now the new Brad Park given Doughty got his hardware this year). They are both top five defenders and those types tend to keep a high level of play right into their late thirties. I think this was a win win for both teams - a shocker for sure - but Montreal just got bigger, and Nashville just got, well Subban. There is a reason why this guy isn't on team Canada (again), and I think that has a lot to do with why this trade happened. Anyone who considers himself a brand (no kidding you couldn't make this up) and has to have his suits just exactly so, must like looking in the mirror a lot. I could see this driving Bergevin crazy at night, trying to figure out a way to move him for the best possible value as not to lose his job (and get murdered by the fan base). He must be relieved he managed Weber. It will be interesting to see how Poile and co react the first time Subban goes to high five and fist bump Rinne after games...or "over" celebrates a good play or goal...the Old Suits in Montreal put the cabash on that considering it unprofessional...personally I don't think that is a big deal at all, Fluery and Bure used to get pretty excited too, not to mention Domi riding the horse, or Selanne shooting his glove, or Tiger Williams doing his thing...these guys make the game exciting for fans - I hope they embrace it in Nashville, and in Montreal, well they can look forward to pats on the head 15-20 times a year when Weber blasts the mesh.
