A shooting outside of a southwest Calgary nightclub early Sunday has left Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks dead, the team has confirmed.

"Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff," the team's president and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement.

"It's a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan's family."

"The loss of this 23-year-old young man at this stage of his life and his career is an unfathomable tragedy," said Ken King, president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation.

"Our sympathies to Mylan's family and to the Stampeders family of players, coaches and staff."

Police responded to the Marquee Beer Market at 4630 Macleod Trail at about 2:30 a.m. after reports of shots fired.

Hicks was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but later died from his injuries. Police say they have three people of interest in custody.

It really seems like these guys could have avoided these issues by making better choices. In a boat at 3am? In a night club after midnight? Tragic day.

What's wrong with a 23 year old being in a nightclub on Saturday night past midnight? Pretty sure that's quite normal.

Nobody could predict getting shot when going out and partying with their friends.

Professional athletes should be held to a higher standard and live a more controlled lifestyle, in my opinion.

If he was home in bed getting ready for his morning workout he would still be alive.

It must be nice to be so perfect, eh?  The rest of the world lives in reality.

He's clearly not living in reality.

I doubt if the player shot, was shot because he's a recognizable football player.

Yes, he should be at home in bed at such a late hour, but (IMHAO) that has nothing to do with his being a professional athlete.  Being out that late bar hopping is foolish for anyone, regardless of profession.  He's young though, and young people make mistakes.  In no way could he predict getting shot though.  His death cannot be considered anything but a tragedy.  He has parents, and they must be suffering terribly right now.  Try putting yourself in their place, and you might see things differently.

Careful Alf, the bar fly police are gonna attack.

You should try living perfectly everyday, if not, why are you living.

Not physically possible. I am entitled to my opinion, no?

Absolutely everyone is entitled to their opinion. Is preaching really an opinion?

Are you a Buddist Monk or something?

I've read many of your well thought out, intelligent posts over the years but telling people that if they don't try to live perfectly everyday then why bother living is obtuse.
