Benning on 1040 September 26th

Thanks Ossi. Awesome work.

I love how candid Benning is. The way he answered the questions about Trouba really speaks to him understanding the need to have a dynamic and multifaceted defensive corps.

The Canucks had the speed and skill in the back end before, but Benning bringing in the size, and size that can move well, is an awesome development.

Also have to give Benning credit for creating a very competitive camp for the forwards as well. Mentioning that there are question marks up front is honest.

Well done, Jim.

Interesting in the Virtanen comment.

Was REALLY hoping we'd see him spend a full season in the AHL under Green getting large 1st/2nd line minutes and not toiling away on the 3rd or 4th line bench warming for large parts of a game.  We drafted him to be a stud not a grinder.

And while I understand that it's a good way to slowly bring these guys in under quality tutelage like the twins.  green is absolutely no slouch either and the added minutes without the pressure of the NHL or home town crowd would probably do him some solid favours

Probably saying he's happy with what we have on the right side because he knows that he's not willing to give up multiple picks/prospects and mortgaging our immediate future in the next couple of seasons for a guy like Trouba.

That and our right side looks pretty good. Tanev, Gubdranson, and Larsen all bring unique quality skillsets the team needs, and aren't exactly old. We simply just don't need a guy like Trouba. He wouldn't make us significantly better for next season, and would, as you pretty much said, would cost a fortune, so he would basically net hurt us in the future. Great player, but there's simply no fit for him, especially if he comes at an expesnive price. I can still see a move this season however in an attempt to upgrade at forward. As usual, our most suspect line is our second line. We have defence and depth, but not many true bonifide difference makers that can play second line minutes. I like the guys at camp though. I personally think one of Etem, Granlund, Rodin, or Virtanen can surprise and be difference makers along with baertschi and Horvat. (I got a funny feeling about this Granlund kid... Excited for him)

It does sound like Virtanen is pencilled in for a spot but he's merely going off of whether Virtanen will have a good training camp/preseason and if he earns his spot like he did last season. Benning probably said that as an optimistic hope that he does make the team and if he does, he's hoping for 12-15 goals.

Interesting comment on Virtanen. But how many minutes will he realistically get here if he's playing on the bottom six.

If we're developing him to be our stud winger for the next 10+ years, why not let him play 20 minutes per game in Utica to help him build his all around game.  It's not like you have to put him on waivers to send him down or anything.

Playing on a 3rd line with Burr and Sutter and maybe some PP2 time (net front), he'd probably see 12-15 of NHL minutes depending on the game.

I think Biega is the odd man out.  I hope they carry eight and it's likely:

Edler Tanev

Hutton Gudbranson

Sbisa Larsen

Pedan Tryamkin

It's helpful both Sbisa and Tryamkin can play the right side.  Tryamkin is probably more able to play the right than Sbisa.

The bottom four will play themselves in or out of the mix.  Or the inevitable injury bug will do it for them
