Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have reduced their pre-season roster by six players.

The following players have been assigned to their junior clubs:

Rodrigo Abols                Centre                        Portland                    WHL

Brett McKenzie               Centre                        North Bay                  OHL

Jakob Stukel                  Left Wing                   Calgary                     WHL

Cole Candella                Defence                     Hamilton                   OHL

Tate Olson                     Defence                     Prince George           WHL

Carl Neill                       Defence                     Sherbrooke               QMJHL

i wouldn't have minded seeing Tate Olson or Car Neill stick get a game but with such an overload on D right now it makes sense

Only surprises might be the AHL elibigle (age 20+) players getting sent back fairly early to their junior teams. Once they join those teams they are committed to staying for the year and can't join the Comets until their junior season is over.

But given that we already has too many players for the NHL spots and Benning has already made several free agent signings intended for the Comets, it's probably better for those guys to head back to junior versus likely having to go to the ECHL (as they likely wouldn't crack the Comets).

At least this way the junior guys don't get a late start with their teams, which is probably best for all involved.

Not surprised by any of the cuts today.

All those players were bound to go back to their junior clubs for more development and playing time.

We'll see them next year again, and hopefully many of them, if not all of them, will make huge strides in their games. Here's hoping!

AND, on top of that, we'll have a few more draft picks, so the system of prospects is looking better and better with Benning at the helm here. I'm encouraged about the present, as well as the immediate and long term future.

A nice crop that might not be ripe till next year.  What's significant is that the depth we have now will only get deeper.

It's going to be competitive hockey in Vancouver and Utica for sometime.

That's the biggest difference that I noticed too as compared to previous years. I'm pretty high on both Niell and Olson, but I think 4 of these 6 first round cuts project as NHL players at some point. It's been a long time since we've been able to say that about any first round cuts

Abols is making the winterhawks make some decisions. Were carrying two imports already, so one of the three is gonna get canned.

I doubt it will be Abols, so I'll help keep tabs on him for fellow Canucks fans.

I sure hope JB was aware of that and didn't just send the guy into some awkward situation in Portland..

Hmmm,

It looks like abols might get canned. >.<

One of our euros cant be traded. The other was brought here because hes projected as a high round pick this next year.

Abols is also 20 making him take two limited spots (overage and euro)

Apparently we have 2 weeks to decide but well probably play him a ton and try to rustle up some interest for a trade.
