stawns
stecher was never going to make the club at the expense of losing an nhl calibre dman. It simply was never going to happen coming out of camp. He had a great game, followed by a few good ones where he was no better than the other dmen. He's going to be an important player for the org, but time in utica will serve him well.

Maybe Etem gets to stay with the team in light of Rodin's injury status, but I expect him to be waived and sent to Utica pretty soon. I expect Gaunce to be 4C. It does sound like WD wants Jake to go to Utica but JB might have a different call. As for Stecher, no surprise he is being sent down. But no-one can pretend the Canucks are keeping the guys who played best. Stecher outplayed Larsen, Tryamkin, Biega, and probably Sbisa. But the Canucks probably promised Larsen a long look to get him to come over and, even if they didn't, that may be the right call. And it does not do much good to have Stecher sitting around at #7 or #8 on the depth chart. It is better for him to play big minutes in Utica. Baer and Horvat are the 3rd line - not the 2nd. WD wants Horvat to concentrate on defence this year and not worry about scoring.

I prefer the experience of Ruutu at centre and let Gaunce grow on the wing with less defensive responsibilities but I can also see Gaunce as 4C and have Burrows on the left wing. It's a coin flip beteeem Ruutu and Skille. You can make an argument for both. We will find out tomorrow. I just see Ruutu as having more versatility than Skille and is also a former 20 goal scorer in the NHL while Skille has been a fringe NHL'er his entire career. I don't see a need for another D man when we have Tryamkin, Biega, Pedan and Stecher as 7-10 guys. I don''t either but if WD sees the need to let a defenseman who can't play defense on the ice, we need to bring in someone else.

We can argue whether or not he is NHL calibre but JB just traded a draft pick for him and Larsen may be our 2nd best offensive dman behind Stetcher. The organization is better served giving Larsen a real look before deciding his fate. If all else fails, we have Stetcher ready to fill in. Ruutu might not be an impact player, but he makes all the small plays that lead to bigger things.

They are going to give Larsen a chance to show that he belongs. If he doesn't, it was only a 5th and was a good gamble. Regardless, Stecher will be back here as soon as the first injury hits, around 7:25PM next Saturday night

Haha. I'm pretty confident Larsen is on a short leash. He will not be Weber 2.0. Remember Willie is also on a short leash. If he continues to play a D who can't defend and ultimately costs us games he will be fired. This is a make or break year for Willie. His contract has not been extended. Unless the Canucks make the playoffs he is pretty much toast. And he may be toast regardless if Benning wants Green in next year.

Willie only has so much control on who is on the roster at this point of the season. Its all about making sure that we are protecting who we need to protect for the expansion draft and positioning us to be under the cap and 23 man roster who looks good on paper. As soon as we submit the roster, they will likely start moving guys around again.

Obviously Ruutu is not the same player he was 5 years ago but you can see he still has talent. Skille for all his hard work and effort does not have NHL talent. That's why he's on a PTO at age 29. It started from Dave Pratt, apparently. If you don't trust him like (probably) most of us, then I wouldn't worry about it for now. More reliable sources have indicated that he will probably go on LTIR to start the season, though.

appleboy
The nice thing about decisions being made right now is that they won't effect us over the long term. Stecher and Pedan are both still ours and will continue to develop. The decisions that they are making are only about this season. This season will still be a transitional year and we do not have enough top end talent to do any serious damage. This year is more about Willie's job. Offensive ability aside, he simply can't play defense. As far as I'm concerned, that's unacceptable for an NHLer. Draft pick or not, we're better off with no chance of him being in the lineup. He did absolutely nothing in camp to justify a roster spot.

It doesn't make alot of sense to eat any of that contract just to switch fourth liners. This is where the problem arises. I have no solution unless another team is willing to take him on which is highly unlikely.
