NHL97OneTimer
I think this needs to be said in its own thread because over the years JB has taken a fair amount of abuse for various reasons. It's only preseason, but I have not seen a preseason like this year in a long time. So many guys I've never (or barely) heard of that are playing good hard hockey. The games have been fairly entertaining and yet most of the veterans haven't even played together. The young guys are playing against some decent teams and not looking bad at all. Even the press is behind what we've seen so far. JB hasn't been at the helm for long at all but so far we have a competitive-looking group of young guys, a much younger team overall and what appears to be a good mix of key ingredients if you will. I think we're starting to see the foundation be built and not on the basis of 5-6 years of top 3 draft picks. Realistic expectations keep me grounded for the next 3 years or so, but I'm pleasantly surprised that I may actually enjoy some Canucks hockey over the next 3 years and may perhaps see a contender again in 5-6 years. So while JB has taken some abuse (and will no doubt get more), I think he deserves the respect of a 1st round draft pick.......give him a few more years to mature in his role. He looks like he's going to some great things for this organization.

Blue_Jays_Canucks
Benning has made some really dumb trades- Forsling for Clendening, Vey for a second...the bad Sbisa and Dorsett contracts...BUT his drafting seems to be alright so far. Desjardins on the other hand...

Desjardins on the other hand... Clendenning: he was searching for that elusive PMD and a lot of Clendenning's play indicated that. It was a miss, but hardly earth shattering. Vey for a 2nd has been covered about 7 million times as to why it, at worst, was a decent trade. Vey didn't pan out but he still played more games for us than your average 2nd round pick AND helped us sooner than said 2nd rounder would have. Sbisa and Dorsett's contracts. Again have been covered many times.... but neither are hardly "bad". I'd say there's maybe 4-600k in overpayment there. Whoop dee do.

Not a Vey fan but you have to roll a few dice to find the win. Also, who knows how he would have been without the family issues. Vey's actually a good example of how JB isn't stubborn and proud to keep a project going. He doesn't mind moving on. WD kept pushing Vey along.....that's a different matter. Only way a team will ever take them is if we add a pick on top as a cap dump. Look, don't get me wrong - I like Dorsett. I get the whole he's a leader thing but there's players in this league who can do what he does for ~$1M. I mean it's not the end of the world (I ain't paying for it lol) but it is a bad contract and in a cap world, that's preventing the team from spending money in other areas which could give them a better chance at making the playoffs and improving. As for Sbisa, lol, there's absolutely no defending that. It was a bad contract from the beginning and will be until it expires. ...I enjoy what JB brings to the table though tbh. It's kind of a love/hate relationship. Somethings you agree on, others you don't. For every time he hasn't done all that well somewhere, he's made up for it another time elsewhere. Can't deny one thing - the man has plan and is on a mission and doesn't care what anyone says or thinks of it. A straight shooter, take it for what it's worth

kingofsurrey
Like what i see in the pre season from the kids / rooks. But lets be honest. It is the preseason. Our scrubs playing against Vets that aren't trying mixed in with our teams scrubs... Real show starts soon and then we will see for real what we have...... How will Rodin / Gaunce / Stecher look playing against a team full of vets that are trying.... ? I like most on here are pumped to see some skill infusion to our club.... But until the reg season starts , my hopes are tempered.

Raymond Luxury Yacht
Jim Benning is appreciating at the same rate as inflation. Taking the mean inflation percent of Canada over the last 5 years, as reported by the worldwide inflation monitor, inflation.eu, I believe Jim Benning is appreciating at 1.402%. My calculations have Jim Benning's current value at 7 "Real Goods". In 3 years he will be worth 19.29 "Real Goods". That's the real goods.

Desjardins on the other hand... Those weren't great, but are by no means catastrophic or of any real lasting impact. Its not like we missed out on a game changing free agent because of those contracts. Forsling may be one that got away, time will tell. He also did well on Baer, and Rodin and GudBranson will be big additions. Eriksson gives us a true 1st line, and another PK guy. People complain about Millers salary but he could lead us to another 100pt season. No GM is perfect, but JBs mistakes are more of the annoying, no long-term impact type so far. And when he's right, its pretty good.
JC2
As far as I'm concerned Benning is no better nor worse than almost all gms, he has his successes and his failures just like any other. I can accept a deal that makes sense even when it doesn't always pan out and the only one that I don't think makes sense was the shinkaruk trade. He traded one of the few truly gifted offensive prospects away when this team is desperate for goal scorers for another redundant two way center. All of the other trades made sense at the time. Linden Vey was acquired to fill the need for a young nhl ready center since they didn't have a sure bet, Horvat was not expected to make the team when he did. I could go on about the others but everything I have to say about them has already been said countless times. Benning will contine to make some good moves and have some bad ones and whoever his eventual replacement will do the same.
Nex is my ex
The problem is people like to look at the bad rather than looking at the good, and they evaluate a GM based on his failures rather than his successes. I personally haven't been a fan of a lot of things Benning has done, but he's also done many good things that in my opinion out-weigh the bad. His trades are a little bad but he makes up for it with his eye for talent and he's brought us some extremely promising young players. He's a pretty decent GM in my opinion
