Not sure what you mean by "needs to make the team" but I think it's pretty obvious that he will make it. Virtanen is all but guarenteed a plane ticket to Utica. Who else beats Gaunce for a spot at this point? I really like Labate but he's still behind Gaunce.

I think he is playing is way onto the team.

In no particular order ...just for refference...

Sedin Sedin Eriksson

Bear Bo Virt

Hansen Sutter Rodin/Burrows

Gaunce Granlund Dorsett/Etem

Factor in a few other strong performances and there are some tough choices ahead.  I like what I have seen from Skille, Ruutu (at times), Rendulic and Labatte but I just don't see how we sign any of the 3 PTOs or let go of experience. Plus they're saying they want to start with 8 D men.

Etem needs to get a few good games in - I am sure his sleep was low the last few days :)

Just looking at the forwards:

Sedin-Sedin-Eriksson
Baertschi-Horvat-Rodin
Burrows-Sutter-Hansen
?-Granlund-Dorsett
Etem/Virtanen/Gaunce/Ruutu/Skille/Labate/Zalewski

I think there is one spot open on the 4th line, and then the 13th forward spot. Granlund hasn't shown a lot so far but JB would be flamed if he tossed away Shinkaruk for nothing since that's already viewed as a poor trade, and he knows it, so I think he's a lock. Etem and Virtanen probably have the inside track but they are the most vulnerable of the forwards to lose a spot. Virtanen is in the same boat as Gaunce (doesn't require waivers), so its definitely possible he could be sent down to start the year and get some seasoning in Utica. Gaunce also has the advantage of playing either centre or wing. If that's the route the team wants to go with, I think Gaunce is the current frontrunner for Virtanen's spot. But its not a lock yet by any means since the other four I listed (Ruutu, Skille, Labate, and Zalewski) are all still contenders. You could maybe throw Rendulic in there too but I see him as a longer shot.

The real interesting part is if Etem can keep his spot. If not, that opens up an opportunity for two of the bubble forwards.

I think Burrows is the one who has Virtanen's spot. Gaunce is battling for Etem's spot

He is a versatile player that can play wing and center. He is big and strong, which the Canucks need more of. He is young but mature.

Skating has been an issue in the past but it's gotten good enough to not hinder him too much. For someone who is to play on 3rd/4th line, tenacity has also been a bit of an issue but not all 3rd/4th liners have to play like Burrows.

I think he makes the team.

I like Gaunce better than Etem on wing and I am starting to like Guance over Granlund in the 4th line center position so definately. That and he has nothing left to prove in the AHL.

No question that Gaunce has outplayed Etem so far. I also like Gaunce better than Granlund, although you can make a case the other way as well. And Virtanen's injury has set him back. I had Gaunce penciled in as 13th man but I now have him in the top 12.
