(Discussion) Same problem persists

I'm sick and tired of listening to team 1040, perpetuate how important it is that the Defence needs to be strong for the club to make the playoffs. That's an obvious point, but is it possible the team (Benning and Co.) have steered this point with team 1040(knowing it is better) to divert from the real issue at hand, They have NO second line. They failed miserably in getting that second top six forward in Free Agency, and have yet been able to deal for one. Just to jog everyone's memory this has been going on for 5 years now. Talk about neglecting the Sedins, heave everything on their shoulders and hope they don't get banged up...Look at the perceived top 16 teams, everyone has a legit 2 lines, so what's the true message management is trying to convey- we are to scarred to make a big deal for a legit top 6 guy because         ? you fill in the blanks

Not a matter of being 'scared'. We're rebuilding with an eye to the future, we don't have the assets to spend in trade (yet), etc.  That improved D depth might give us that depth in the near future though.

And FWIW, Rodin's looked pretty good, particularly coming off injury.

I think they tried  to find a 2nd liner - but when you look at our cap space we don't have a lot of room.  Besides that we certainly have some potential for a 2nd line within our group - we will see as the season progresses.  We are re-building or call it whatever you so wish and I don't believe we are playing for the cup this year but I can see where we will be competitive.  Patience grasshopper .

I don't know how you can call a 6 years at 6 million Erkisson a "fail at miserably getting that second top six forward in Free Ageny"

What were you expecting them to sign Eriksson and Lucic?

Canucks have scoring depth.  A healthy Sutter, A bigger role for Horvat and confident sven Baertschi are all capable of scoring 20 goals.  Rodin has fit right in and looks like he could score 12-15 goals.

What do you consider a 2nd liner?  In today's NHL that is a guy who can pot 17-25 goals and get 40-50 pts.

Guys who fit this mold:

Hansen

Sutter

Bo

Bear

Rodin

*if by some miracle Burrows gets back to form....

Will it be the best 2nd line in the NHL? No but it is a good starting point.

We added Erickson,  brought Rodin over from the SEL,  and will hopefully get a full season from Sutter.  Adding 3 top 6,  at worst top 9 forwards to last year's team is a pretty good start.  We didn't give up a single asset to do that.  Not bad in my opinion.

Is no one concerned about this considering the state of the teams over all development?

Not considering how much cap we have coming off the next 2-3 years, no.

By that you mean the sedins, who haven't been replaced, Miller and burrows.

then we have to sign emergers like GUD, Sven, Hutton, tanev, jake, etc.

and again: who replaces what the sedins have done?.....i mean most around here expect the sedins to sign again.  Are they all of the sudden going to do it for some cut rate just because?

I would not be surprised to see the Sedins re-sign on 1-2 year contracts at +/- $5m per. We'll also have Boeser coming in on an ELC.

But yes, Burrows $4.5, Miller's $6 then Hansen's $2.5, Sbisa's $3.6 then Dorsett's $2.65 and Edler's $5m. Even without the twins, that's almost $30m in cap space in the next 3 years with those guys.

It's really not a concern.

Also, we have a bunch of new contracts to negotiate next season ... Horvat, Gaunce and Etem among the forwards and Guddy, Tram and Hutton on defense,  Hutton will want Sbisa numbers so that's a raise of 2.7 million alone for him

I think in that scenario if you're right about the twins, roger Nielsen should be replaced with two golden statues of henrik and Daniel.  Better yet at the entrance or top of the lions gate bridge.

fingers crossed on boeser too that he does decide to sign here.

And?

We have the space to cover the raises. None of Gaunce, Etem or Tryamkin are likely to earn huge raises (and if they do, it likely means we can move a more expensive vet). Horvat and Hutton will be on moderate bridge deals and Gudbranson's already making $3.5m meaning he's not all of a sudden going to jump up huge amounts. He'll probably cost us ~$2m +/- more.

They already deserve statues. Boeser and the team have both indicated he's all but certain to sign here at the end of his UND season .
