Well nothing changed after wave 2. We hope the chemistry built last year carries in to this year. We hope Aleko comes out stronger, and we hope the Defense can handle its own. We feel that our D is our weak point, but we hope with a young team we can skate circles around the west!

2022-2023 Power Rankings

Western Conference

Pacific Division

1-Vancouver-Reigning Western conference champions after a Cinderella story trip through the playoffs as the 8 seed. Prime aged forwards with skill and size, balanced blueline of puck movers with shut down partners, and one of the best goalies in Thatcher Demko. No David story this year, they project to be a Goliath in the Pacific.

2-Las Vegas-On the other end of the playoff seedings last season, the Aces won the President's Trophy last season, playing strong from beginning to end. the team has 4 of a kind on offense with Nathan Mackinnon, Nolan Patrick, Max Domi, and Dylan Strome terrorizing goalies. Every defender had at least 30 points last season as well, showing their ability to jump start the play to the forwards. Ilya Samsonov being solid but not dominant looks like the difference between Vegas and Vancouver.

3-Los Angeles- A retool in the past few seasons has fans in the Staples Center optimistic. The core of Kopitar and Doughty remain, and highlight the team's strength down the middle. With Vasilevski in net and the continued development of young blueliners Charles Schwab and Timothy Liljegren could help the Kings make a push.

4-Edmonton-This is a team that always appears strong on paper, but just cant find the right combination to capitalize on it. Face of the franchise Connor McDavid will lead the favorite in Alberta, alongside fellow number 1 overall pick Gaelan Love, with the stonewall of Cory Schneider in net. Depth in scoring is a strength with players such as Jake Wise showing to be promising while also affordable on the books, leaving the Oilers with just under 5 million in cap space to work with if any additions are made.

5-Calgary- This team has been defined by the simple philosophy of outscoring the opposition. Wave after wave of forwards can score for the flames, highlighted by Johnny Gaudreau, Sam Bennett, and Matthew Tkachuk aided with skilled defenders to get them the puck. The loss of Sean Monahan hurts, but the biggest question is between the pipes. Jacob Markstrom appears to be the starter, yet has been a journeyman through his career, never cementing himself as "the guy" for a winning team.

6-Anaheim-The Ducks have been built front to back, but work still needs to be done. Kyllian Scheidt was hyped as a potential face of the league level player, but hasn't had a "wow" season yet. Noah Nash had a breakout season, but with only those 82 games under his belt, his sophomore season will be closely watched to see if he continues, or was a flash in the pan. A young and unproven defense is a question mark, but the biggest issue is the anchor of Harri Sateri in net, taking up 6 million in cap space, while only playing at a backup level.

7-San Jose-The struggles in the Bay Area have been well documented, but there is reason to believe in progress this season. The young forward group is establishing itself and building chemistry to spearhead the attempt to get out of the bottom of the standings. Austrian youngster Marko Hadwig looks to be a building block for a blueline that has desperately needed a leader to build around. Russian Andrey Aleko is promising, but still raw. If San Jose was a stock, I'd buy now and prepare for the dividends to pay off in the future.

Playoff Predictions: Vancouver & Vegas battle for the top spot and potentially number 1 seed in the west. Los Angeles and Edmonton fight for the final guaranteed entry into the postseason. Edmonton is the dark horse of the division, if everything clicks they could win the division. Calgary stays in the wildcard bubble all season, while Anaheim and San Jose look to the future.

Is this the draft order rankings?

The Columbus Blue Jackets enter the new season with a new goal in mind: making it past the 1st round. After a successful season last season where they qualified for the playoffs for the second time in RGMG 4.0 history, they hope to build off that campaign. It was a breakout for the young guys last season as the second line, formed by PL Dubois, PO Macintyre, and Alex Debrincat,  all had 65+ points. With their strong play as well as usual outstanding play from their first line, they made it to the post season, where they lost to the Washington Capitals. A new leadership core was built last season shipping out veterans Ryan Murray, Nick Foligno, and Brandon Dubinsky to the West

The Achilles heel for last season was the lack of defensive players in their bottom 6. Khokolachev was a solid offensive contributer on the 3rd line, posting back to back 50+ point campaign but with consecutive minus seasons, became a defensive liability.  So too were miss signings in Jimmy Hayes, Mattias Janmark, and Darren Helm, who let the team down defensively and Paul Bittner, one of the softest players in the league. GMDC went out to trade and overpaid for Nick Bjugstad and the trade blew up in their face. Bjugstad was thought to be an elite 3C with strong defensive play and good offensive skills. His defensive game had paid dividends but it came at a cost of suffocating the offensive talents of his linemates. This season, we hope he improves his offensive game while continuing his strong defensive game, or else he becomes Brandon Dubinsky 2.0

GMDC therefore upgraded his bottom 6 this year bringing in Nino Niederreiter, who captured 66 points last season, Brock Nelson, who captured 51 points last season, and Brandon Sutter who had 25 points. All of these players will be called upon to be responsible defensively, kill penalties, and pot in a few goals. We feel with these acquisitions, there will no longer be an Achilles Heel in Ohio.

Keys to make the post season in the Buckeye City

  • Continued development of the DMD line (Dubois, Macintyre, Debrincat) line
  • Saad, Karlsson, Strome continues their PPG play
  • Bottom 6 plays strong defensive hockey
  • Defense plays the same

Panthers Reveiw

The Panthers have been quite active, since last seasons trade deadline really. Trading players from there core, trading there top goalie. The Panthers started 4.0 as a contender. trading picks and prospects trying to contend for lord Stanley's mug. They came close in the 2019-20 playoffs with a run to the Eastern Conference finals only to be swept in 4. Since that season they have missed the playoffs twice and GM Tylez knew time for a change had come. Go back to the trade deadline of last season. Gm Tylez off loaded Reilly Smith to the Las Vegas Aces for Defensive prospect Adam Boqvist. As well he also offloaded Nick Bjugstad to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Alexander Khoklachev, Rasmus Dahlin and Bode Wilde. This offseason has proved to be a strange one though. Tylez has continued the tear down, but chose till after free agency to do so. He traded Vincent Trocheck to the Vancouver Canucks for Karl Kennedy and Michael Gildon, and then just a few hours ago traded there prized # 1 Goalie in Petr Mrazek to the Senators in exchange for Milos Malik, Zakary Scott and Kobe McNabb. He also managed to snag recently drafted prospect Malo Begin from the Stars for Mark Pysyk

The team however after all the trades seem to still be a team that can stay competitive. After acquiring a hulking 7 8.0 prospects, an 8.5 and a 9.0, GM Tylez has done very well at restocking the shelves in Florida. Add that to an already 2 more 8.0 prospects, The Panthers future looks really bright. Not to mention top players such as Jonathan Huberdeau, Alex Barkov, Nick Ritchie, Anthony Mantha, Aaron Ekblad, and Viktor Antipin are all still with the team, the only major weakness now is goaltending.

Milos Malik (9.0D) LD/RD - COMP: Roman Hamrlik DRAFTED: 5th ovr/2021 -  A smaller stay at home dman, is an excellent skater and plays physical in all situations. Is an excellent shot blocker, plays as if he were 6'9. Will need to work on improving his offensive game and is very raw.

Zakary Scott (8.5D) LD - COMP: Matt Dumba DRAFTED: 26th ovr/2019 -  Small offensive defenceman, loves to jump up in the rush. Isn't afraid to play the body, is always agressive. Currently at a point per game pace with Guelph, absolute cannon of a slapshot. Wrist shot needs work.

*Capstick Bertuzzi (8.0D) RW/LW COMP: Boone Jenner DRAFTED: 13th Ovr/2021 -  Big powerforward that aggresively runs all over the ice. Has impressive physical strength and is an above average skater. Has a real good shot, but needs to work on stickhandling. Hockey sense is also lacking.*

Karl Kennedy (8.0D) RD/LD - COMP: Matt Niskanen DRAFTED: 57th ovr/2019

Rasmus Dahlin (8.0D) LD COMP: Gustav Forsling DRAFTED 36th ovr/2018

Adam Boqvist (8.0D) LD COMP: Oscar Klefbom DRAFTED 43rd ovr/2018

Bode Wilde (8.0C) RD COMP: Braydon Coburn DRAFTED 27th ovr/2018 -  Big stay at home dman, will be heading to Minnesota with Benoit next year. Very good skater for his size, punishes opponents with his strength. Doesn't always make the right play, will need to work on offense.

Michael Gildon (8.0C) LW/C/RW COMP: Kyle Palmieri DRAFTED: 28th ovr/2019 -  A bit of a hidden gem as he plays in the NAHL, scouts aren't quite sure how his game will matchup with better players. Gritty two-way winger with excellent skating skills. Needs to work on his defense a bit more.

Malo Begin (8.0B) LW/C COMP: Jordan Eberle DRAFTED: 10th ovr/2022 -  Very similar player to Pooley, however doesn't play consistently enough to be as good. Always a threat to produce offense from all areas on the ice, whether it be goals/assists. Has very good patience and poise.

*Aki Vaananen (8.0B) C/LW/RW COMP: Erik Haula DRAFTED: 11th ovr/2022 -  Very determined defensive center, who plays a complete 200 foot game. Does the ugly work on the ice, opening up room for more skilled players. Doesn't have many major flaws, is strong at every asset there is.*

Kobe McNabb (8.0B) RW COMP: Andre Shaw DRAFTED: 14th ovr/2019 -  Fast and tough: two words to describe Kobe. Quality leader, doesn't play as small as he actually is. Excellent skater, gets in on the forecheck quickly. Agitates other teams top players as well. Another safe pick.

Only 2 prospects in that bunch were taken by the Florida Panthers in the draft. Vaananen and Bertuzzi. Besides that the Panthers have acquired 6 former 1st round picks, and 3 former 2nd rounders. That doesnt even include the other prospects in the pool. Some of which have great potential! If I am a Panthers fan, i am really excited for the coming years

Canadiens Off-Season Review

This off-season, the Montreal Canadiens made big waves in the organization. Some of these moves were questionable by some, but regardless of what was received in return, the moves had to be done. While they did make the playoffs in Season 1 of RGMG, the Montreal Canadiens throughout Seasons 2 to 5 fell short of a playoff position. Despite having an elite, top goaltender in Carey Price, it ultimately was not enough for all of these seasons. Alex Galchenyuk and Max Pacioretty have always been consistent for the team, and defenseman Shea Weber was a serviceable asset for years.

Despite all of this, players will only get older. Montreal knew that Carey Price only had so much longer to stay competitive in the NHL, and that goes for the aging Shea Weber as well. The Canadiens were not going to get things done with the current collection of players, so a new look was needed. This off-season, Montreal unloaded goaltender Carey Price to Nashville for the likes of goalie Olle Eriksson Ek (7.5D), veteran Paul Stastny, young gun Vladislav Kamenev, and recently drafted defenseman Quinn McEneny (7.5B). They also swapped draftees with Pittsburgh, giving up right winger Andrei Gareyev (8.0B) for goaltender Federik Kavanagh (8.0B). Shedding more age on the roster, Shea Weber was dealt to the Boston Bruins for Brandon Carlo, Griffin Reinhart, Bruno Skudra (7.5C), and a 2nd Rounder. Montreal might have given up huge talents in these players, but they shed over $10M in cap space of players who will likely be retired within 1-4 seasons.

The organization is now moving forward with youth, with younger talents like Alex Galchenyuk, Mikhail Sergachev, Noah Juulsen, Nikita Scherbak,  and Artturi Lehkonen still on the team. Keeping on the blue, red, and white are also veterans such as Nathan Beaulieu, Max Pacioretty, Sven Andrighetto, and Martin Reway. This leaves room for a new generation to start filling in for the older guys, while complementing the younger members of the team heading forward. Joining the team this season are all three of the deadly AHL line of Josheau Fontaine (9.0D), Braken Moir (8.5C), and Peter Badoucek (8.5F). It is not entirely certain whether or not all three of these players will stay with the team all season, but they will surely get their chance. Alongside them is sophomore young gun Grigori Denisenko (8.5C) who had a 34 point rookie season, and Eemeli Vesalainen (8.0D), the defenseman who played 23 games getting 8 assists.

It is more likely than not that Montreal will not be in the playoffs next season. They may in fact be a lottery team, but they will certainly fight. They are going to make strides on a more developmental path, with a bit of a rebuild.

2022-2023 Power Rankings

Eastern Conference

Metro

1 -Quebec- The most aggressive team in the offseason for upgrading their roster has the Nordiques looking like a serious bet to come out on top of a Metro division that is seeing a changing of the guard. The additions of John Carlson and Braden Holtby are massive, and Quebec still has young talented players coming into their own in Comtois, Aho, and Ferrante. The goaltending will never be the reason the team loses as behind Holtby is another star goalie in Semyon Varlamov.

2-New York Rangers- Despite aggressive additions at the trade deadline last season, the Rangers actually missed the playoffs but a repeat of that is highly unlikely. Madison Square Garden is seemingly the new home for Metro division star players with Evgeni Malkin, Niklas Backstrom, and Marc-Andre Fleury leading the way. A deep blueline headlined by Travis Hamonic stand in front of 'Flower', giving the team balance. However, the Rangers window is very narrow, as all the previously mentioned players are 32 years of age or older.

3 -Columbus- Another aggressive team in the offseason, notably signing Nino Niederreiter to a massive 8 million dollar deal, as well as adding Brock Nelson and Nick Bjugstad. Olli Maata and Seth Jones lead a solid blueline and any mistakes will be covered by Sergei Bobrovsky. Will the new additions play to the value of their contracts, or will it be another case of free agency pricing players beyond their ability?

4-Philladelphia- A solid regular season season should have the Flyers ranked higher, but that success came on the back of Martin Jones having the season of a lifetime. Can he possibly repeat that? If so, the Stanley Cup could be coming down Broad Street. Offense is weakness of the team, but the Flyers seem to gameplan to only need 1 or 2 goals to win.

5 -New Jersey- Brendan Gallagher will be busy taking photos with the pile of money he now has after signing a deal worth 54.25 million dollars in total. He will join Taylor Hall and Claude Giroux to give the Devils plenty of firepower. Mackenzie Blackwood is quietly becoming a very solid goalie, shoing flashes of brilliance over the past two seasons. Defense is the weakness here, with no true number 1 guy.

6 -Pittsburgh- Some fans talk about their team needing to push the big red button and blow up the team, Pittsburgh actually did it. Gone are Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Fleury. Phil Kessel, Daniel Sprong and Gustav Nyquist are now the leaders of the team, but how well will they come out of the shadows of the previous super-stars? A servicable blueline and free agent Jaroslav Halak in net give the Penguins a fair chance to win, but they are definitely starting a new cycle.

7 -Washington- A team in transition and looking for new identity, many notable names have been shipped off, and more probably will as the Capitals look to a new generation. The remaining pieces left are still solid, such as Shea Theodore breaking out after a middling start in Detroit. the Russian duo of Ovechkin and Kuznetsov are still there to lead the offense, but for how long? Even if he isn't traded, Alex Ovechkin is 37 years old now so his days in D.C. are numbered one way or another.

8 -New York Islanders- Much of the core from their recent Cup victory remain with Tavares, Milano and Barzal leading the charge up front. An always deep blueline is still led by Brent Burns, though Luke Green has emerged as the next leader of the defense. The defense will have to play perfectly, as goaltending is completely unproven since the retirement of Henrik Lundqvist. Jean-Marc Comrie is projected to be the starter at age 21 and with a grand total of 1 professional game of experience in the AHL where he didn't even see a shot in relief of the starter.

Playoff predictions: The Nordiques and Blueshirts look to be the head of the class, with Columbus having a good shot for playoff success. Philadelphia needs Jones continuing to perform to have a deep playoff run, or even chance at the playoffs. The bottom half of the division however is a guessing game, with massive roster turnover occurring. Only expect 3teams from this division to make it to the second season.

2022-2023 Power Rankings

Eastern Conference

Atlantic

1 -Detroit- The Cup winners kept the team mostly intact, or lateral moves made such as Patrice Bergeron sliding in for David Krejci, and Marc Staal taking Dan Girardi's 2nd pair spot. The top line of Landeskog-Draisaitl-Toffoli returns, but questions start in the middle 6 forwards. How will the two lines click with new centers for each line, as well as the departure of Brock Nelson? Luke Kunin has shown promise, but if he falters the secondary scoring that was Detroit's calling card last year could be in question.

2 -Toronto- Absolute firepower up front with Auston Matthews, Jamie Benn and William Nylander haunting the dreams of Atlantic division goalies. Supporting them is a blueline full of puck movers who can enable the forwards. John Gibson has been added to man the pipes for the Maple Leafs, and is a solid option. This team will have a puncher's chance in any game this year.

3 -Boston- Sidney Crosby, Shea Weber, P.K. Subban. Not an all star game roster, rather stars that share the dressing room in Beantown. Add in David Pastrnak, Owen Tippett and Joe Veleno and you have another Atlantic team that can shoot their way out of problems. Biggest question is in net with Malcolm Subban having a down year last season, and Lars Ivarsson having only 1 unremarkable AHL season of experience on the smaller sheets in North America.

4 -Tampa Bay- After making the Cup final in 2016-17, Tampa hasnt had a chance to put it all together again after the rapid development of other Atlantic teams. Any team that can add a guy like Logan Couture as 'depth' is loaded up front, the common trend in this division. Add to that a defense headlined by Victor Hedman and young Czech defender Vlastimil Petruzalek that can control the play at both ends of the ice. Ben Bishop remains in net, always giving the Bolts a chance to win.

5 -Ottawa- Despite the team having so many changes at General Manager, the Sens have a solid lineup that would be ranked higher if this division wasn't known for how aggressively they have loaded up the past two seasons. Bobby Ryan and Mike Hoffman will put the puck in the net consistently, and backed up by many strong forwards like Colin White and Mikkel Boedker. Tyler Myers leads a defense that looks to push the pace, and new acquisition Petr Mrazek will give them a solid, if unspectacular option in net.

6 -Buffalo- A forward group comprised of players entering their prime in Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart and Alex Nylander will give the Sabres a chance to outscore the opposition in any game. A defense led by Rasmus Ristolainen looks solid on paper but seems to need to mature to match the talent up front. If rookie Maio Letendre can start his career the same way Marc-Andre Fleury did, the palyer most compared to him at the draft, Buffalo could surprise. However, any team looking to a 19 year old to backstop the franchise is taking a huge gamble.

7 -Montreal- Similar to Pittsburgh, the big red button has been pushed. Carey Price is gone, and rumors persist that captain Max Pacioretty has been shopped around in an effort to boost a rebuild. Mikhail Sergachev is a piece the team will be built around, having already being given a leadership position in the locker room, and only 24 years of age. Olle Eriksson-Ek is the biggest hope for Les Habs in net, but to be compared to an all time great is a large task.

8 -Florida- Contrary to the top half of the division, Florida has decided to sell off older assets and look to the future. They seem to have played the market perfectly, adding in tons of talent up front and on defense such as Malik and Begin. In addition to this huge crop of prospects is the stockpiling of picks. Jonathan Huberdeau and Alex Barkov will continue to lead the team, but one has to wonder if they will also be sold off. Though this looks to be a long season in Florida, the future looks as bright as the Miami sunlight, and could dominate this division in the future after the top teams run out of steam.

Playoff predictions: Very similar to the central, the top 4 could finish in any order and it wouldn't surprise anyone. Tampa could easily vault to the number 1 spot, as could Boston and Toronto. Ottawa looks like a solid contender for one of the remaining wildcard spots in the east. Buffalo could join that conversation, but it seems too early.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Gustav Nyqvist [A] - Jack Roslovic - Daniel Sprong [A]

Robby Fabbri - Jiri Fojtik [8.5B] - Phil Kessel [C]

*Mats Zuccarello - *Bryan Little - *Filip Suchy [7.5D]

*Patric Hornqvist - *Andrew Shaw - Sam Gagner

Justin Abdelkader

Gustav Forsling - Jake Gardiner

**Kelsey Williams [8.0B] - *Alex Goligoski

**Gabriel Conacher [8.0C] - Lukas Bengtsson

Andrej Sekera

*Jaroslav Halak

Vitek Vanacek

* notes new Penguins or returning to the team after playing elsewhere

** notes promoted prospects

Some Thoughts...

- overall another roster that is focused on offence (surprising  )

- a weak defence should allow for increased minutes for both Williams and Conacher that would otherwise be eaten up by a prime aged top 4 dman

- hoping to compete for a wildcard spot but could easily be in for another top 10 finish

- a million prospects in the system including some that could have made the roster but another year (or part of the year) in the minors won't hurt

Winnipeg Jets Starting Line-up

Kyle Connor - Mark Schiefele - Patrick Laine
Nikolaj Ehlers - Nikolai Rotenberg - Blake Wheeler
Tyler Ennis - Mikael Backlund - Joakim Goggin
Conor Sheary - Chandler Stephenson - Marko Dano

Josh Morrissey - Jacob Trouba
Thomas Hickey - Justin Braun
Jeremy Lauzon - Jason Demers

Matt Murray
Antti Raanta

Starting off the season, we'll spread out the offense a little more this year rather than have all our elite players on one line. The defense is definitely a work in progress and depending on how the team does to kick off the year, we'll decide if we even have a chance to be a playoff team or not, and perhaps look to make our defense better.

We have a lot of defensive prospects in the organization but are looking for more, as it's still our weak point. I'm willing to swap offensive prospects for defensive ones of similar age and potential

You trying to become the first in RGMG history to hit the 50 contract limit? :P
