2022/20223 Forward Power Rankings

1. Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals)- Ovie has led his team through thick and thin. He has been a beast in the league, compiling 553pts and a +254 on a strong Caps team. Will he ever get his cup?

2. Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers)- Connor has been a force out west with Edmonton. With 530 Career points, and with age on his side, he wont be slowing down any time soon

3. Phil Kessel (Pittsburgh Penguins)- With a cup in Pittsburgh, Phil has been a dominant force. 3rd all time in plus minus and 2nd in goals scored. Still a guy to do some damage on the rebuilding Penguins

4. Evgeni Kuznetsov (Washington Capitals)- 7 years younger then Ovie, Kuznetsov will lead the charge when Ovie retires. with 527 caree points and a 1.07 pts/g, watch for him to take the reigns.

5. Gustav Nyquist (Pittsburgh Penguins)- Like Phil, he has his cup, a surprise to be this high on the list, but the numbers do not lie! One of the top players every season he has played

6. Ryan Johansen (Nashville Predators)- Ryan has quietly been in the top 10 in points. with a 1.02 pts/g and one of the tops in +/-, he has earned his spot here in this list/

7. Jamie Benn (Toronto Maple Leafs)- Jamie has been a very consistent player. His play has spiked playing in Toronto leading him to be a top 10 pt getter last season. With Toronto always in the hunt, look for jamie to improve on last year

8. Tyler Seguin (Dallas Stars)- With his running mate gone last season, Tyler wasn't able to crack the top 20 in scoring last year. However, with a career 1.07 pts/g and the additions of Monahan, expect that to open up some ice for him!

9. Sidney Crosby (Boston Bruins)- Another player who missed out in scoring last year as well, but still an elite player. Playing in Boston in the difficult Atlantic division doesnt help his case, but look for him to improve this year

10. Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary Flames)- Johnny hockey is now the lone face of the franchise. With Monahan shipped out, Gaudreau will be heavily relied on, Look for his pt totals to go up

11. John Tavares (New York Islanders)- After dodging trade rumours early on in 4.0, tavares now has a cup under his name and is 11th all time in scoring. With the youth taking over in long island, Tavares may continue to slip as well. but his career totals can't be overlooked

12. Steven Stamkos (Chicago Blackhawks)- Having a cup and conn smythe to his name is one thing, but Stamkos has slipped in the top scoring races the past couple years. just barely over a point per game career, but still an amazing player worth watching

13. Patrick Kane (Tampa Bay Lightning)- Unfortunately for Patrick, Tampa has struggled in the playoffs, But with a guy like Kane on your team anything can happen. patrick has been a great player, and only last year missed out in the top 20 scoring

14. Jesse Puljujarvi (Edmonton Oilers)- Jesse has made some waves in Edmonton. The last 2 years being in the top 10 overall on scoring, and having cracked the top 20 in scoring career wise, He will be a force playing along with McDavid

15. Nikolai Ehlers (Winnipeg Jets)- Ehlers is 1/3 of the best line in hockey as some say. having been 2nd ovr in scoring last year, and making noise in previous seasons, he will be heavily relied on to keep the scoring up.

16. Daniel Sprong (Pittsburgh Penguins)- With Pittsburgh, Sprong looks poised to take over as the face of the Franchise. He has been a force since he entered the league and looks to continue that trend.

Defense and Goaltending Rankings - Top 16

1. Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago's defense is truly stacked. Letang is a top dman in this league and Lindholm is a very reliable guy to have as your 2nd best dman. On top of that, they have Johnson, Werenski, and Bowey in the #3-5 spots, the types of players some teams wouldn't mind on their top pair. Emelin may be a weakness, but he can easily be sheltered on this team. Backstopping this defense core is Jonathan Quick, who may have had an off year last season but should still be one of the best goalies in the league.

2. Tampa Bay Lightning

As usual, Tampa Bay has plenty of high-end defensemen. Hedman, Petruzalek, and Shattenkirk are all good top pairing dmen, and Edler may be at that level as well. Although age is catching up to Mike Green, he is definitely a good option as a team's #5 dman. Similarly to Chicago, their weakness is at the #6 spot with Hajek not showing much progress at the AHL level, but he'll be starting off in a pretty good situation. Despite Ben Bishop's inconsistent play, he tends to be a good starting goalie, and could make this team a true powerhouse if he plays his best.

3. Quebec Nordiques

Quebec has made a very quick turnaround. A defense core that looked like nothing special as recently as last season is starting to look as stacked as Chicago and Tampa Bay. They've acquired a #1 dman in Carlson and a very good top 4 dman in Muzzin. Noah Hanifin has always been a #1 dman on this struggling team and may turn out to be a top dman in this league if the team improves. McDonagh has struggled, but has yet to play for a good team and looks primed for a resurgence. Sophomore Mark Croft appears to have a bright future and rounds out a very strong top 5. Like the top 2 teams, the weakness is the #6 dman, Pesce. Not much needs to be said about Braden Holtby in net, as he is clearly a top 2 goalie who will significantly improve this team. Don't be surprised if their defense ends up being the best in the league - there is clearly potential for some of their aforementioned dmen to improve. But potential is one thing and results are another.

4. Nashville Predators

Nashville's defense is solid once again. Josi is one of the best dmen in the league and Fowler is a top pairing dman who has shown high-end ability at times. The bottom 4 of Ekholm, Niskanen, Krys, and Fabbro is very reliable. Nashville is the first team on this list to not have any real weakness, but at the same time, it isn't quite as loaded as the first 3 teams. Defensively, this team will be fine, but offense from the defense is important too. Bounceback seasons from Fowler and Niskanen would go a long way. If not, this defense group is solid but nothing spectacular. Carey Price, the other top 2 goaltender who was traded this offseason, will be backstopping this team and will look to have the same effect that Pekka Rinne did.

5. Detroit Red Wings

After last season's cup win, it's clear that Detroit's defense is one of the best in the league. Matheson is an elite offensive dman while Pietrangelo's stable presence has quietly been a big part of their success. Clary Syvret seems to have become an excellent 2nd pair dman for this team, and their 3rd pair of Despres - Pouliot may be the best in the NHL. However, Marc Staal does not look like a capable #4 dman with his declining play and increasing age and could cause problems for this team. Still, any problems this team faces will be mitigated by 3 time cup champion Tuukka Rask.

6. Toronto Maple Leafs

This season, Toronto had 2 Norris Trophy nominees in Brodie and Rielly. Along with Spurgeon, they form arguably the best offensive top 3 in the league. The criticism of Toronto's defense core has always been their lack of defensive ability, but they do have Savard, Cole, and Dumoulin as a very safe bottom 3 to help deal with this issue. Between the pipes is John Gibson, who isn't spectacular but consistently plays like a starting goalie.

7. Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas's defense seems to be built in a fairly simple way. Ekman-Larsson and Larsson form a good top pairing, Klefbom and Chychrun form a good 2nd pairing, and DeAngelo and Murphy form a good 3rd pairing. All 3 pairings are adept offensively, but more impressive is their defensive play, which allows the Aces to be a top defensive team despite having a mediocre starting goalie in Ilya Samsonov. The defensive side of this team may not be stacked with talent like other top teams, but they get the job done.

8. Vancouver Canucks

Regular season statistics from last season don't do Vancouver's defense core any justice. But a quick look at the playoff stats and stats from previous seasons shows that they are in fact one of the best in the league. Leading the way is Thatcher Demko, who has developed into an elite goalie and was the biggest reason the team went all the way to the finals. The names on the blueline may not be what you'd except from a top 8 defensive team, but they have done a good job so far, especially in last season's playoffs. Dumba, Tanev, Juolevi, Janecek, Gudbranson, and Jordan Subban collectively did a good job of keeping the puck out and provided some offense as well.

9. Boston Bruins

P.K. Subban and Shea Weber may form the best pairing in the NHL next season. Gostisbehere and McAvoy make a great 2nd pairing and are arguably capable of more. Darnell Nurse is certainly a good 3rd pairing option and his partner Borgen is no slouch. Boston could easily have the best group of defensemen in the entire league, so what's the problem? It's the guy in net. Malcolm Subban has not shown that he can consistently be a starting goalie in this league, despite playing on a good team in front of him. Boston hopes that Shea Weber's defensive prowess can make it easier for him.

10. Dallas Stars

It seems like Dallas has fixed their defensive issues. Murray and Klingberg have always been good top pairing dmen, but the additions of Pysyk, Kulikov, and Helenius in their bottom 4 should give them a more well rounded defense core. This should allow Honka, who has shown elite offensive ability, to not be hindered by defensive issues. Jake Allen has consistently been a very good starting goalie for this team. There's reason to believe that Dallas could be higher on this list if things work out, yet they could end up much lower if it turns out that their defensive issue is more due to team defense.

11. Edmonton Oilers

Although they had an off season, Edmonton's defense group is clearly still reliable. Gaelan Love has been a decent #1 dman for them for the most part, putting up over 40 points every season. He does not have much offensive support on the blueline, and Edmonton may be missing a good #2 dman to play by his side, but that doesn't change the fact that Hjalmarsson, Stone, Scandella, Martinez, Russell are all good defensively, giving them a safe bottom 4. Cory Schneider also had a bit of an off season in net but is likely to bounce back and be one of the best goalies in the league.

12. Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus has the greatest Finnish presence on defense, with youngsters Maatta and Eronen looking like good top pairing guys. Seth Jones is their 3rd best dman, and their bottom 3 of Gabriel Carlsson, Haydn Fleury, and Zach Bogosian is very solid. Backstopping this team is Sergei Bobrovsky, a good starting goalie who can be elite at his best.

13. Los Angeles Kings

LA's defense has always been a bit of an enigma. Drew Doughty has been the best dman in the league at some points in his career but has yet to show it in 6 years, playing like a low-end #1 dman most of the time. Timothy Liljegren and Charles Schwab were said to have elite potential, but look to be 2nd pairing dmen instead. Still, this team has a good group of defensemen, with Brodin, Stralman, and Clague rounding it out. If everyone could produce a bit more offense like they are capable of, this defense core would be a serious threat. Vasilevskiy has been a good starter for them as well.

14. Philadelphia Flyers

It might be strange to see the team who finished with the least goals allowed in the regular season ranked this low, but a lot of it was due to a career year from Martin Jones and strong team defense. Their defense core is good but nothing spectacular. Travis Sanheim has been consistently good for them but isn't an ideal #1 dman. And while, Leddy, Slavin, Reilly, Schultz, and Johnson are all serviceable dmen, some of them may be playing too large of a role, at least in comparison to the top teams who have top pairing dmen on their 2nd pair. If Martin Jones can repeat, Philadelphia could prove everyone wrong, and I'm sure their GM would love to do so.

15. Ottawa Senators

Ottawa is a team that has struggled heavily in terms of defense in past years, but they seem to be on the right track now. Myers, Krug, and Barrie should form a good top 3 especially on the offensive end, and Ceci should be fine as a #4. The signing of Voynov should help solidify their bottom pairing with Chabot. The acquisition of Petr Mrazek will likely pay off for them, as he has been a very good starting goalie in this league and is a massive upgrade on Darcy Kuemper.

16. New York Rangers

Finishing off this list is a team that has completely restructured their defense over the past year. They have Travis Hamonic, who has been one of the best two-way dmen in the league. Zadorov has shown top pairing potential throughout his career despite some bad years. Hutton, Murphy, and Del Zotto are all good offensive dmen who round out a decent top 5. The weak link is Yandle, who has declined with age, and another issue is that their bottom 4 has no safe dmen to support their risky puck movers. In net, the Rangers finally have a starting goalie in Marc-Andre Fleury, who will give them a chance to make the playoffs.
