danaimo
So with the recent flurry of activity with players being placed on waivers and the fuss and angst about Pulkinnen, Griffiths, Etem and last year with Corrado, I was wondering, what value do waiver wire pick ups actually have? I was trying to remember a waiver wire pick up that turned into a diamond in the rough. Can anyone name a single player that went on to play over 200 NHL games after being picked up off the Waiver Wire? Come on there must be at least one. With the combined knowledge and intelligence of CDC we must be able to think of at least 4 or
Kass
The Canucks most recent (October 2011) Waiver pickup that has done well for himself is the one and only Dutch Gretzky. Dale Weise.

Dale Weise. Yep, Dale has made about 290 NHL appearances since being plucked WW. This doesn't include the time when he ripped up the Dutch League. Wilbur
The best one for the Canucks all-time would've had to have been Martin Gelinas. Although perhaps I'm missing someone before him.
cripplereh
no gelinas was the best ever by canucks
canucklehead80
How can we forget Michael Grabner? Put up 34 goals the year he was snagged by the Isle. Since going on waivers.... 377 GP 99 G 63 A 162 PTS Not a bad waiver wire pickup. Now could you just imagine if this was was Etem in a year, lol. Justdean10
Ryan Stanton did well for awhile, claimed him off Chicago.
apollo
Wasn't Wellwood a waiver pickup for us too? Wish we kept Weise... Arguably one of the greatest beauties of all time. Miss that guy =(
Bruce Boudreau
VILLE FREAKING LEINO instrumental in the Flyers unlikely 2010 Cup Final run. The Blackhawks had no answer for him. In the post game Duncan Keith exclaimed how gald he was to not have to deal with that "Dang Ville LEINO"! They almost beat a stacked Chicago team using a journeyman minor league goalie who got hot named Michael Leighton too. *Technically he was traded to the Flyers but it was only because Detroit knew he would get claimed if out on waivers so they wanted to get something instead of nothing for him. mll
The Habs picked up Paul Byron off waivers from Calgary last year and signed him to a 3 year deal. He's their top PK forward.
Ghostsof1915
If they had value they wouldn't be on waivers. With a roster crunch sometimes players are in a numbers game. Don't expect a roster pickup to carry you to a Stanley Cup Finals.

LaBamba
When I saw the title of the thread I thought to myself "cool, I'm going to open this thread and digest some examples of players who tore it up after being picked up on waivers" Presented and nicely researched by the OP. Instead I walk into a BYOB sausage fest.
