Powerful October storms expected to pound B.C. South Coast this week

Yesterday's storm brought 20-45 mm of rain to Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. The storms expected later this week are expected to top 100 mm of rainfall in inner coastal regions, and 200 mm for the west side of Vancouver Island, according to Environment Canada.

A series of powerful storms is expected to pound B.C.'s South Coast this week, including Metro Vancouver and Victoria, with heavy rains and strong winds expected to arrive Wednesday night and continue through Sunday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the following areas, with rainfall and wind warnings likely as the storm approaches:

  • Metro Vancouver.
  • Fraser Valley including Abbotsford and Chiliwack.
  • Vancouver Island, except the Northern Vancouver Island.
  • Sunshine Coast.
  • Whistler.
  • Howe Sound.
  • Southern Gulf Islands.

Rainfall on the west and inland areas of Vancouver Island may exceed 200 mm, while rain in inner coastal regions could top 100 mm, Environment Canada warns.

Winds over exposed coastal areas may exceed 80 km/hr.

"Summer is over, we're back into the wet pattern," said Environment Canada meteorologist David Wray.

"We do see several strong storms on the horizon, such is the case this time of year normally."

He says while this is expected to be one of the two to three "typical" storms southern B.C. receives each year, this one could be slightly wetter because it is drawing moisture from a typhoon in the western Pacific Ocean.

If the storm continues to track towards the South Coast as expected, Wray says Environment Canada will likely put out an official warning on Wednesday.

Was planning on going over to Comox on Friday-might have to go on Thursday night. The Queen of Burnaby is getting pretty old and the crew seem more careful about sailing in the rough stuff- probably worried she'll crack into pieces.

I just love that picture, sometime in June wasn't it? :)

I lived in Alert Bay for 3 years and got used to rain. (56-60  inches per year). The locals used to tell me about a great wind they call the Nimpkish, blew houses off foundations they said, I though it was a story like how the 6 inch bait fish becomes a 150lb tuna.    Till I was there the day the wind hit. HOLY CRAP.

We had to give assistance to a fish boat that was heeled over to the point of near capsize, pulled up on her weather side and watched as the fisher slowly righted herself, kept them in our lee till we could get out of the wind. I miss that place at times. Good people and all the nature you could want.

First major storm since moving here. Bring it on. Or should I prepare to be disappointed?

If you still have your roof tomorrow..be happy....

Sometimes they build these things up so much and they turn out pretty weak...other times some sneak in and do alot of damage....when it gets upwards of 100k wind speed..might be a little brisk.

That thing is still sailing?  Has it been updated at all?  I hated being stuck with that ferry over 20 years ago, I'd hate to think what it is like now.

They have redone the midships public washrooms and put in a gift shop, but not much was done in the engine room, still using the original Merlees open rocker diesels.

Ship seems to be lower on the starboard side than port as well. Not sure if it caves out or in on that side. Lifeboats have been replaced with chutes and rafts.
