[Report] Sabres sign GM Tim Murray to contract extension

Tim Murray isn't leaving Buffalo any time soon.

The Buffalo Sabres rewarded their general manager with a multi-year contract extension, the club announced Thursday.

Murray was hired in January 2014, two months after the firing of former GM Darcy Regier.

He's led a Sabres rebuild that's included low finishes, a pair of second overall picks, and several impactful trades.

Under Murray, the Sabres missed out on Aaron Ekblad and Connor McDavid but selected forwards Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel in back-to-back drafts in 2014 and 2015. Murray took Alexander Nylander eighth overall in June.

He acquired goaltender Robin Lehner in a trade with his former employer, the Ottawa Senators in January 2015, and also added Evander Kane and Ryan O'Reilly in blockbuster deals with the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche, respectively.

This past summer, Murray acquired blue-liner Dmitry Kulikov from the Florida Panthers and signed free-agent forward Kyle Okposo to a seven-year, $42-million deal.

He's a good GM. I like the team he's built and I think they'll be playoff bound next season. I wish we would've just rebuilt like that.

He's better than Benning, but Benning is a better scout.

Which begs the question why isn't Benning just the head of scouting? or an AGM?

They're very comparable as scouts.  Murray helped put together the Ducks' Stanley Cup team.

Such a good gm. Took skill to get eichel.

Yes, and then to pump McDavid up on the way in too. The guy has to be a rocket scientist to roll out the red carpet for McDavid with a thirty percent chance (or something like that) of winning the lottery. You just know that had to make Eichel feels special. Of course he's not alone, hockey gm's seem to make boneheaded decisions routinely. It's that rare exception that doesn't screw up on the regular that becomes legend.
