J.I.A.H.N
Just a question I am wondering about.......not sure which forum to put it in. When taking on a bad contract................what does taking on these amounts get you ? $2,000,000 $3,000,000 $4,000,000 $5,000,000 $6,000,000 Not to sure what the return should Be? Any Idea's? Bad contracts are never worth it unless you're getting additionally a good player or top draft pick in return.

Depends on what we're giving up? I don't think there's a guideline for returns on specific amounts for contracts. But some players who don't deserve that amount but are making around that amount are... Varlamov - 5.9mil - overpaid 1b goalie Brown - 5.9mil - overpaid bottom 6 fwd Phaneuf - 7mil - overpaid bottom pairing dman So think about what a team would be willing to give up to get rid of that contract rather than buy them out. Do you have some other players in mind?
cripplereh
Hartnell maybe
GoBoGo53
Phaneuf is a servicable 2nd pairing dman, and Ottawa will never be a cap team, and most of his salary is paid out. Doesn't make any sense for them to trade him. Don't think the Avs are looking to get rid of Varlamov. You are right about Brown, although thats an albatross of a contract
Beeekz37
Brown is a bad contract, plain and simple. I can see how, at the time he was offered it, he may have been worth it had he become the guy they hoped he would... but those days are gone. He's only worth 3 tops imo. Perfect example of this is the Carolina Chicago trade. Canes had tons of cap room, and Chicago had to get rid of a grade-a youngster in Teurivinan (spelling) just to get rid of Bickell's 4.25 mill cap hit. So I think anything over 4 mill should land you a decent prospect/nhl player Also teams against the cap are forced to trade decent players, a few years ago the Islanders traded a picks for Boychuck and Leddy. Savvy move Was hoping for the Nucks to do something with the cap space we had, but instead we signed Erickson.

He's getting up there in age and has a long term, so maybe when he starts to decline.
Lancaster
Term is important too. Someone with a 6 mil x 3 year contract will be harder to move and will require a high compensation package to get rid of. Another player say 7 mil x 1 year will be easier to swallow.
