High potential but no motivation and lack of confidence

I do believe that this team has great potential. In the 3rd period of Capitals game, they gave a bit more effort and they were able to compete with one of the best teams in the league. However, you could see their big weakness on defense which is holding the offense back. The D have no clue what to do when opposing team is forechecking. They keep turning over the puck in their own zone and this is holding back the offense. It's no surprise they lost against LA, Anaheim and Washington as they are the top teams in forechecking. In addition to that, they have no motivation and confidence in their game. The 1st/2nd period of Washington was so bad that it felt like I was watching an amateur hockey team. Zero effort. I don't know what is the solution but the coaching staff and management better find one soon or else the season will be over very early.

And for those who are wondering how I can say that defence is the issue given that they have not given up a lot of goals, let's not forget that they are getting great goaltending and 3 of the first 4 games of season were against Sabres, Hurricanes and Flames which are not exactly powerhouses (and also bad forechecking teams).

Defenseman are who you are blaming?

Really?   The only good thing about our team other than the goalies.

Jeez bud.

What about being shut out for 9 periods in a row?

Even if we held the other teams to 1 goal, we still lose because WE CANT SCORE.

our d crew are fine.

We need goals.  Period.

Thanks for coming out.

He is making a valid point that the offence begins with getting out of our own end. Clearly the issues are abundant.  We need a legit NHL coach.

In response to your first point about the defence: I see the same thing right now as well. We've gotten too slow at moving the puck out of our zone. Some of it is the d-men not making the right play but most of it is because they have no support from the forwards to make those quick short passes to exit the zone.

In response to confidence issues: that is also true. They are lacking the swagger they had a t the start. They lack confidence because they don't shoot enough. They are second guessing every opportunity and instead of shooting either pass into traffick or stickhamdle behinf the net. Enough is enough shoot or get benched.

Like i said in the pgt

Quote

We need to get back to playing the game with confidence. Like we were doing at the beginning. Everyone was pushing in the same direction and contributing.

We need to get back to playing as  cohesive units. Each person needs to be clear on their roles , know the game plan and have a pack mentality each and every shift.

We need shoot more. We need to shoot to score on every shot. Reounds and second opportunities usually result in easier goals. Too many chances are being passed up because players like the sedins, Eriksson seem to think they can pass the puck into the net.

We need to reward good plays and punish bad ones. If a line or a player is playing lights out we need to utilize that line or player as much as possible. If Hansen seems to be flying double shift him on different lines to get things going.

Hence why we drafted Ollie Juolevi.

We have one maybe two d-men who can skate the puck out of trouble or get the puck on to a forwards stick to counter a forecheck, but overall it's bounce it off the glass to get it out of our end at all costs. This creates little to no speed through the neutral zone and often results in the team turning the puck over. It's no wonder we're not spending a lot of time in the offensive zone.

But yeah, it starts with the d-men.

To the point made regarding no support from the forwards, I agree that it's a valid point. However, I think the situation in D is so bad that we can't even start looking to that. I feel like the D have no clue what to do when they get first touch of the puck in the corner. There isn't even the opportunity for a D man to skate out the puck. My point is that from the first touch of the puck they have already lost the puck. We have guys like Hutton, Edler and Tanev who are more than capable to skate the puck out but they are losing the battle in corner before even making the first pass. I don't think it's a lack of talent but rather no confidence for some reason. Coaching staff really need to find a solution to this. Either by getting back to the basics or finding a way to motivate them.

As for the forwards, if you look at first and second period of Capitals game, they were getting chances and shots with the limited amount of offensive rushes that they had. It's just that they are not getting enough puck possession time since they are so tired chasing in the defensive zone. And again I go back to a key stat, they performed the worse against teams that are good at forechecking.

Perhaps I am beating the same horse as many others but maybe we do need a coaching change. WD down, TG up? We have seen what Willie can (or can't do), and I know it's never usually a good thing to bring in a new coach during the season, but it could be the kick in the @$$ they need.

The Hutton regression has been real this year. Doesn't seem like anyone is talking about it a whole lot either. Sophomore slumps are expected for youngsters so its not the end of the world, but this form of Hutton makes an already offensively challenged blue line even worse.

Yeah but what would that really accomplish? We dump the moustache and bring in a new coach, best case scenario is we go on a magical run through the season and make the playoffs, then most likely get destroyed pretty quickly and end up roughly where we are now next year.

This team isn't ready to win anything yet so we might as well hang on to Willie for now and let him steer this ship into the ground and plan for the future.

PMD.. PMD.. PMD.. Its always been about getting a guy that can get it out of his own end.  Edler second guesses and often makes mistakes, Tanev is great for the short quick pass, but to break someone out of our zone for a rush in the other end, not as much.  Sbisa coughs it up regularly in our end, Gudbranson and Hutton are ok, but not elite level puck movers, Stetcher has been a relief, and looks good so far, but wait until the other teams start hammering on him like they have Larsen, that fore check against our guys is what causes this.  Juolevi will be the one who ends this problem for us, but he's a long way from being a regular here.  We also need a couple of defensive minded forwards, remember Kesler and Malholtra?

What this team also needs is a group of forwards that can control the puck in the offensive end and maintain it after more than one shot on goal, we don't create a lot of pressure and its quite often one and done and we are chasing back to our zone.  This team used to be top in the league for possession but we just aren't anymore.  The Sedin's unfortunately aren't able to own the puck the way they used to, so its time to come up with something else.  Hansen playing the top line was a good start, his speed creates space, but it seems to me that we almost need one other speedster up there.. Dare I say split the twins?  Daniel - Sutter - Hansen?  Baertschi - Henrik - Erickson?  Kind of a 1a - 1b mentality.

This might make the team a bit tougher to match lines with, and if we can snag another skilled winger to slot in, suddenly this team may look more dangerous.  I would want a strong forechecking LWer with a set of hands (Kane has been beaten to death but he fits the mold, he's just an asshole).  I don't know honestly know where this LW is going to come from but its been said that Tanev would be the likely bait.. As much as I hate this, its true, and we do have a glut on the blue line, Stetcher deserves his spot, and we need to play Tryamkin.  Montreal has a ton of speedy wingers that can help, and they are publicly asking for quality D-men, my ask would be Gallagher and a second (maybe 1st).  Yes thats another right winger, but Erickson can switch sides.  He's not huge, but he's gritty and sniffs out filthy goals.

"D not knowing what to do in their own end"

"Hutton regression is real"

Everyone does realize, that all of these players are highly skilled professionals right? Professional being the operative term. Despite having the skill to skate through an entire opposing team, Hutton is instead passing off the puck because of....

The system.

These professionals are playing to the system they are being told to, otherwise it would be absolute anarchy on the ice and we'd be getting blown out 5-0 every game.

Willie seems to think that in order to win we need to be stalwart defensively, and that's coming at the cost of offensive ability. You change the coach, you change the system.

Hire someone with an offense first mentality, have the correct players deployed in the correct fashion, and you'll see goals being scored.

Here's a hint, it begins with relying LESS on the Sedins, and MORE on Baertschi, Horvat and Virtanen as the 1st line.

Whenever I hear the whines about Toronto and Edmonton I just remember this. Neither Edmonton or TO have the D or G we're going to have in 2-3 years. By then I think the 1D and 1C roles are filled. And Boeser.

Juolevi has the 1D potential. He already has the hockey sense, just needs to bulk up a bit. He'll be more in the mould of a Karlsson than Weber and thats just fine.

On 1C... maybe Bo depending on he keeps rolling and who his line mates are. Bo with Boeser could be scary.

The way Willie is running this team I think we'll be out of the playoffs by Christmas. So next draft we might get that 1C or a 1LW to go with Bo and Boeser.

High potential? Honestly, I don't see what half of you guys are seeing.

I think the Canucks have low potential but our depth players are playing out of their minds right now and we're keeping games close. I think we had a solid outing against the Caps but lost to our better team.

The only players not doing their best IMO are the Sedin's.

A lot of second year players regardless if they are from College or Junior, or AHL struggle. Hutton at pre-season looked amazing. His struggles are along with Loui, Baer, Sutter after a strong start, it goes up and down the lineup.

Bo is a bright spot on offence.
