Tanev

Anders Lee

Kieffer Bellows

Anders Lee is a big young(ish) forward, who can score goals. But he only has one goal, no assists in 10 games this season and has been playing on the fourth line. Hes got 3.75m cap hit with 3 years left, so he is under contract right in his prime. Although right now, he is seriously under performing. Hes had a couple of productive seasons.

They need some defensive help, as their number one pair of Leddy and Hamonic is giving up way too many goals against. They are clearly not good enough to shut down other teams top lines, which is Tanev's best attribute.

Bellows was the 16th overall pick in 2016, definitely good for a rebuilding team. Been described as a physical player who likes to shoot.

Maybe the value is a little off? let me know what you think

I like this trade very much. Maybe throw in our CBJ 2nd and the majestic 5th rounder just to sweeten the deal.

thank you, and yes i agree, we'd have to throw in a little more like a 2nd round pick. But I definitely like these 3 players as the core of the deal

Value seems a little low for Tanev. Tanev is an analytics darling so we should be aiming to trade him to a team that values analytics beyond everything else (like Arizona, etc).

Tanev needs to land us a young top-line forward who is either entering their prime or new to the league (think Landeskog or Sam Reinhart). Something along those lines.

I feel like Arizona would be the perfect team to trade Tanev too. He'd be the perfect guy to play alongside OEL and Pheonix is all over the analytics as well as having their cupboards packed full of premium young talent. Not sure who id ask for tbh but it seems like a place we'd get the most value for him

Yup, for another 4 weeks, at most. What then?

It doesn't make sense for the Isles beyond 4 weeks from now.

I guess, but Pulock has only played a hanful of nhl games. And its especially hard to play well after being out for a month injured, right as the season starts, and then come back.

You're still missing the part where this still doesn't make sense for the Isles in the slightest. Hamonic and Boychuk are top 4 defensemen. Neither of them are going to be pushed down to the 3rd pairing to make way for Tanev. Similarly, Tanev is too good to be playing 3rd pairing minutes in New York. However, when Pulock comes back from injury, he can be eased into the lineup by playing very doable 3rd pairing minutes, likely to be in the 12-14 minutes per night range.

Makes no sense for the Isles. They already have Hamonic, Boychuk, and Pulock as RHD.

The Isles decline, not because of value, but because it doesn't fill a need.

And Seidenberg on their right side as well. They don't need Tanev at all.

^Furthermore, they'd lose 1 of them at the June draft.

This is the other part I didn't even want to get into, but this 100x.

It turns out that Pulock is not protected in the expansion, so the Isles have to make a hard decision of whether they want to protect 7 forwards and 3 defense, or 4 forwards and 4 defense. Because if they choose the 7 and 3, then one of Hamonic, Boychuk, Pulock, or Leddy would have to be made available. Throw Tanev into that mix and it becomes even worse.

They can only lose one player in the expansion, so they're going to lose someone, but that would just be a ridiculous trade on their part.

On the other side of things though, since they already have to expose one of those dmen you mentioned, if they value 2 of them close to equal they could add Tanev to the mix and then expose both of the dmen that have equal value to them (still only losing one of them just like if w/o Tanev)

(just a hypothetical but it is a possibility)

I would think they'd sell off one of the four, & go with 7 & 3. Prob will be a lot of fairly unbalanced trades(next 5,6 mos) by GM's trying to get their blend of beans smooth & not too bitter.

And Boyhchuk has an NMC so he can't be exposed. They aren't going to bring in another D making $4M+ for their right side only to have to lose someone to the expansion draft (if somehow you forget that they wouldn't play said D in 3rd pairing minutes).

The Isles have a succession plan in place for their right side defense. Boychuk/Hamonic/Pulock is solid. Their left side consists of Leddy and De Haan, but due to expansion draft and protecting players from that I don't think they want to add another defenseman. I think the value is there, no doubt, but doesn't fill team needs for the Islanders.
