Shouldn't Carrick be suspended? Canucks out-manned by Leaf leaving players bench

Chaos sprang out of the Canucks / Leafs game at 14:52 of the third period. Lost in the endless talk about Kadri, Burrows and subjective debate about possible suspensions is the fact that Connor Carrick SHOULD be suspended for an automatic 10 games.  Once Martin started pounding on Stetcher, Connor Carrick jumped off his bench, likely noticing that Auston Matthews was out on the ice in this heated scene. Carrick grabbed onto Brendan Gaunce, and both men wrestled to the ice behind the Canucks net - this can be seen at the 19 second mark. They continue to be engaged throughout the time, as seen at the 1:16 mark.

This man-advantage for the Leafs is evident, as at the 38 second mark, we see Ben Hutton tangling with both Martin and Matthews.

Referees gave Carrick a 10 Minute Bench Penalty for Leaving the Bench.

The NHL rule book appears pretty cut and dry in this situation.

Rule 72 - Leaving the Players' or Penalty Bench (http://www.nhlofficials.com/rule72.asp)
(a)No player may leave the players' or penalty bench at any time during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation.

(c)The first player to leave the players' or penalty bench from either or both Teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or playoff games of his Team.
So why is there absolutely no mention in the media about the clear violation of this rule and the need for a suspension?

2011 Vancouver vs. Chicago Game 6

OT Chicago had too many men on the ice and that's a textbook penalty, and even then they didn't get a penalty.

After that day I learned that no textbook written rule is a sure thing.

It's a little tough to even call them actual rules when a lot of them end with the phrase "at the discretion of the commissioner"

It's less a "rulebook", than it is a "How to Protect Our Buddies, Application Guide"

Pretty much, it's a very inconsistent league unfortunately.

Unless it's against the Canucks. Then it's a sure thing.

Miller, Hutton, Sutter didn't hesitate to jump in there.

Baer was still holding on to his stick. I think that's a sign of, please don't touch me. I wouldn't want him on my line in cases like these.

I agree, says something about his fight level. Fighting is what it is but the guy needs to show some fire. Not scoring? Take some aggression out on a leaf (pillow substitute).

I thought it was the smart move to keep Marincin and Matthews from getting involved.  Once Marincin went after Sutter he pulled him off.

Babcock on Kadri hit: "It's reviewable but we have good people at the League & they'll look after that. It won't be a problem."

Posted previously early in the "Kadri's High Hit On Daniel Sedin" thread last night.

According to the boxscore - Marincin and Carrick came on the ice at 14:48.  The fight started at 14:52.

Yeah, I don't see the evidence of the Leafs having more than 5 skaters or Carrick coming on after the fight starts at all in the video.
