I think it is because they genuinely believe in Willie and think his approach as a players coach is what the team needs. I disagree with that but I do get the sense they want him to succeed his way.

How can anyone believe in the crap Willie is bringing to the ice? If they put the needs of Tweaks over the needs of the team, this franchise is heading into a black hole of stupidity and despair.

I have faith though that Benning may have had enough, and brought Jarvis in to manage once they get rid of Desjardins and his stuff.

Completely opposite of what he's been doing with the team.  Last night's first period is one of the few times I've seen the team with energy and speed in 3 years.

having enough stuff for a 2 week road trip and having enough stuff for a multiple-month stay in a different country on the opposite coast are 2 very different things.

maybe it's planned for him to spend the rest of the year there and he's renting a place instead of staying in a hotel? the guy is going to need his personal effects.

Fire AV!

Worked last time, didn't it?!

Same old crowd posting the same old fire the coach crap.

If you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem. Firing Desjardins won't be a magic tonic. This team is just untalented in many ways. Having said that, keeping Desjardins will not improve things either. His system is not a good fit for this group of players. So either Benninv keeps Willie and gets rid of a whole bunch of players did ones who will fit or he gets rid of Willie and gets a coach who can build a system around what he has. At this point someone will take the fall. It's always the coach before the GM.

It's almost impressive how the Canucks can make the right move -- having Virtanen in the AHL -- yet still screw it up.

Biggest load of crap I have seen from Willie yet. He does not hold vets accountable at all and they regularly leave behind young players when they make a mistake. He needs to be teaching psychology at a community college not coaching an NHL team.

I am sure he "wants" the team to play that way. Unfortunately they really don't.

you know that was a satirical Photoshop job right?

I don't buy into it. I think Willie is the wrong coach for this group. But after 3 coaches in 5 years the coach killer rep of the core group is still going strong.

Until the Sedins are gone and new and passionate leadership takes over, it's Bill Murray Groundhog Day in Vancouver.

I'm confused.  I can't imagine how Jake is feeling.  Honestly what can possibly explain how he has been handled?

Coach and Management not seeing eye to eye?

Management and Ownership arguing?

Management having no idea how to develop a young player?

I've not been one to criticize Benning and co, but wtf is going on?

Ironic how all of the posts in this thread blame the coach for this kids NHL upbringing. He has no worth ethic, not even comparable to Bo, he deserves this shame being brought upon him. Maybe go to another concert and skip practice, I am sure your teammates will appreciate it.

Burrows said it all when he stated "I hope he gets it" apparently not Alex, this kid is a bust of a pick.

Kassian 2.0, except who knows if he will even be the Kass who is now sober and on the Oilers.

Thanks hometown boy, next time learn from Bo on how to work your way into the league, GL in the AHL, doubt you will even come close to a point per game.

It hit me this morning - the simplest explanation here is Jake is still very much a young kid. Sometimes the brain doesn't catch up to the body. He's probably not mature enough to deal with his situation up here, and if he's never really had to work that hard to get where he his then he needs this until he's mature enough to put in the work.

All of this benching, short trip to Utica #1, etc. might have all been to try to wake the kid up.

Give him a year to mature. He's got all the tools from the neck down, maybe he just needs to grow up a bit. Its not a knock or an insult, mental development in kids can take longer sometimes.

Lol ya I know. Unfortunately for us he has actually pretty much said all of those things at one time or another and it is clearly what he believes his approach has been. My point is that he is pretty delusional or a pathological liar. Same goes for Benning.

... What's the big deal?  They decided to send him down on the weekend, want him to stay down but he didn't have all of his "stuff" with him.  He went back to Vancouver, got his "stuff", got paid an extra couple of days at his NHL rate...

Not really sure why this is viewed as a negative?

Yeah, much as the optics are questionable, I'm willing to give the Canucks the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe they really wanted to give Jake a chance to come home, see his family, and pack some stuff for an extended stay in Utica.

He was demoted for those two games during a road trip. So it's probably true that he doesn't have enough stuff for a full on move to Utica. Obviously he could have someone pack his things and ship them, but maybe they saw some benefit in bringing him back to town.

Beyond getting his "stuff" packed, having him fly back allows the team to have a sit down meeting between Virtanen and the coaches, management, and player development staff. They might want to explain the situation face-to-face and give Jake instructions on what they expect from him and what the plan is moving forward.

It's possible that what looks like mismanagement is actually sound management. The Canucks might legitimately feel like the situation demands an in-person meeting. And it's likely that a young kid like Virtanen could benefit from some face time with senior Canucks staff (if handled correctly) before starting a more extended stint in the AHL.

Plus, by being recalled, flown home, demoted, and flown back again, he gets a little more NHL level pay and banks a few more airmiles. ;)
