Comet Fan 0727
No one on this board knows how it went down with Benning and Jake. For all we know JB told him he would play the 2 weekend games in Utica, get called back up, and then get sent down again for an extended period of time. Think about all of the little things he probably had to take care of back in Vancouver if he is going to spend most of the year in Utica. Jake's first game last weekend was a disaster, but his 2nd game was much better. Travis Green talked about how him and JV watched and discussed the 1st game and what was needed on JVs part to improve. An extended period of time away from the spotlight will hopefully turn his career around.

Pack your bags, ride the bus and learn how to show some toughness instead of the privileged lifestyle you have been living. At best I hope he becomes a 3rd line grinder who throws hits at this point, while I watch Nylander and Ehlers score some goal scorers goals as rooks. Anyone who cannot play with McDavid has no hockey IQ or sense. This kid has done nothing but regress since he was drafted.

xereau
We don't know whats going on behind closed doors, but this seems like Cody Hodgson all over again. No points in Utica, hmmm? Why was he called back then? This seems to me like they are trying to embarrass the kid.

Plenty of people on the board are pulling stuff out their butts and projecting it on to Jake to explain his lack of success so far: supposed lack of work ethic, supposed off-ice behavior, being a Bieber fan (whilst definitely inexcusable, probably not the root cause), when the reality is Jake is a young man with a very special but undeveloped toolbox, and needs some big minutes and mentorship from a coach who isn't just worried about saving his own butt right now. LaBamba
I'm 90% sure he either dogs it in practice or pouts about not playing. Its time to hit the reset button with this kid before it's too late.

Agreed Chon, im outta plusses ill hit you back later

Out of JB's first year first round draft picks we traded McCann, and all other players picked around JV are outperforming him by a wide margin. This organization could not afford to screw up this badly, now we are watching a slow team get pounded for 7 goals at home. There is no excuse in this day and age for drafting an immature kid like JV, millions are invested in player development and scouting. Apparently the "character" JB professed about has not materialized because I still watch the same heartless team every game besides Dorsett. GL JV, hope you become a PF, but it will probably take 5 years before you realize you are a scrub of a player who could not even make it work with McDavid. Enjoy 3rd line minutes in the bigs bud, and keep listening to Bieber. I guess if he's got all the physical tools, and a season away from mom, being on the bus trips, etc. helps him grow up, then we've got that guy JB thought he had drafted. Can you really tell at 16 or 17 between most picks? Was Nylander some mental giant then? I don't know. Benning is a good scout, I have a hard time blaming him if Jake didn't grow up fast enough. Hindsight is 20/20, we needed a PF at the time he was drafted. However, Nylander has NHL pedigree, in fact both him and his brother were drafted top 10 Who knows how it will turn out but at the very least the Nylanders had their father to teach them how to be true pros. JV on the other hand has done nothing to prove otherwise, besides being a partying privileged punk, gifted a spot in training camp yet even Burrows stated this kid has yet to put it together due to a lack of mental awareness. Once again, if you cant play with McDavid, you are pretty much a bust. Too bad, this org could have used a top flite scorer which this kid will never be. Enjoy 3rd line minutes in the bigs bud, and keep listening to Bieber. Sounds like you have a legitimate hate-on for a 20 year old kid. He's kinda dumb, he's a little immature, but he's a Canuck. My monster expectations for this kid were dashed at his abysmal World Juniors last year, and it's scary to think how little he's improved almost an entire year since then... But have we not seen glimpses? I mean, I understand this is 2016 and guys jump right into the show now, but 10 years ago who would have hit the panic button on a 20 year old power forward in-training going down to the farm team in his first season of even being eligible to do so? I will say it: we probably should have taken Nylander. Sedins, Naslund, etc., we've had success with smart, skilled Swedes. It's all hindsight though, obviously Nylander would look better on the PP with Juolevi and Boeser - it is what it is. But Jake brings some serious intangibles of his own. All these Kassian comparisons are ALMOST warranted, we all saw 'glimpses' with Kass as well, but these are not the same players. I'll elaborate: You mentioned the "millions [that] are invested in player development and scouting". Absolutely true. Have you ever been a scout for this sport? Have you ever tried out for a team? Have you ever seen the guys with the clipboards, jotting down notes on players, effectively deciding their futures with every pen stroke? Well guess which player these guys are licking their lips to see? Jake freakin Virtanen. This IS a player that scouts lust for. Scouts salivate at the physical tools; the kid has mass, a deadly shot, and elite speed. He was literally born to play this sport. Hockey sense/smarts come into play come game time, and that's where a guy like Ehlers shines. But this is nature of our sport. Skating is number 1. Strength is number 2. And if you're supposed to be a goal scorer, Shot is number 3. Jake gets picked ahead of Ehlers every single time. In every draft! Even going back to Atom, Pewee, Bantam, etc. Jake was 1st OA in his WHL bantam draft, dude. It would take a real bold GM to veer from that in his first ever NHL draft. There literally was not another option for Jimbo. In essence, Jake Virtanen reminds me a lot of my younger brother. I was an obsessed hockey fanatic, practiced shooting pucks for 3+ hours a day growing up, ran my own goaltending clinics in high school, lived and breathed sport. My brother couldn't even name a player on the Vancouver Canucks. He was 6'2 by the age of 15 and I maxed out at 5'8. I had to watch as all my efforts were denied, never once even making it past the first round of rep tryouts, while baby bro made the AAA team every single year. He had no passion for the sport, almost seemed like he didn't even enjoy it, but regardless, coaches wanted him because of his NATURAL, god-given abilities. Long legs, beautiful stride, hard shot, heavy hitter, no heart. My brother IS Jake Virtanen.
DIBdaQUIB
The handling of Jake seems almost designed to draw him and his agent out to complain so they can justify trading him away over his "bad attitude". If he is NHL ready...play him. If not...send him down for the year. This 4th line role, benching and up -and-down from Utica BS is destroying any confidence the kid had. Just an embarrassing way to handle a rookie.

CanadianRugby
Management: "Jake, we've called you up to tell you we're sending you back down." What the? cbdoubleu
When you're barely 20 years old, playing your 2nd year of pro hockey, you're not sent to the minors to "turn your career around", you're there to start your career. If Jake Virtanen is 23 and he's still having trouble staying in the lineup, then you can talk about saving his career. Look at Kyle Turris.
