Nucker 67
Drafted 6th overall. Utica - 22 games played = 0 goals 1 assist Vancouver - 65 games played = 7 goals 7 assists I think JB really over valued him at the draft.

cbdoubleu
I can't wait until a 23 year old Virtanen puts Nazim Kadri's head through the boards, and all the fans here who whined about not picking Nylander build a statue of Jake outside of Rogers Arena. Firing Desjardins won't be a magic tonic. This team is just untalented in many ways. Having said that, keeping Desjardins will not improve things either. His system is not a good fit for this group of players. So either Benninv keeps Willie and gets rid of a whole bunch of players did ones who will fit or he gets rid of Willie and gets a coach who can build a system around what he has. At this point someone will take the fall. It's always the coach before the GM. Agreed, this is the other side of the coin, and well put. Folks, please, embrace this false flag of hope and competitiveness. Let this tank succeed! This IS the perfect storm, albeit a few %#&! years late, but here is their wave of opportunity to draft as well as possible, which is a better position than to not have one. A good captain always goes down with his ship, so I've heard, as is the case here with the Sedins. (Great players, but unmanageable assets) None of this will end until these NTC players are off the books, irrespective of who is coaching. From AV's dismissal, to a canary in Tortz, to Kesler to the spots media, this team's fate has been captured by many. Embrace it, especially those who have made every effort to be an ostrich. And what of those 1000 scribblers and their jargon-laden nonsense about this teams chances this year? All those predictions had this site in a posting frenzy, citing conspiracy and hatred. Hatred! That insanity has also been toned back to a mere whimper of accusatory slander and backpedaling of those articles/blogs, whatever, only now referencing how mean those people were. Give it up, folks. Maybe its time to retire the media conspiracy theory rhetoric on here, once and for all. Maybe this year has been great for alignment of the fans, media and the Canucks, simply due to the accidentally transparent direction and requirements of this long-overdue bottoming out of a stale core. The reality and gravity of where things are at should polarize the fanatical with the realist. Well, *should, I'll leave it at that. The last chip yet to fall in this poker-like bluff will be an admission from the Canucks that Aquaman fingers his marionettes, Linden's and Benning's, moves. He's kinda dumb, he's a little immature, but he's a Canuck. My monster expectations for this kid were dashed at his abysmal World Juniors last year, and it's scary to think how little he's improved almost an entire year since then... But have we not seen glimpses? I mean, I understand this is 2016 and guys jump right into the show now, but 10 years ago who would have hit the panic button on a 20 year old power forward in-training going down to the farm team in his first season of even being eligible to do so? I will say it: we probably should have taken Nylander. Sedins, Naslund, etc., we've had success with smart, skilled Swedes. It's all hindsight though, obviously Nylander would look better on the PP with Juolevi and Boeser - it is what it is. But Jake brings some serious intangibles of his own. All these Kassian comparisons are ALMOST warranted, we all saw 'glimpses' with Kass as well, but these are not the same players. I'll elaborate: You mentioned the "millions [that] are invested in player development and scouting". Absolutely true. Have you ever been a scout for this sport? Have you ever tried out for a team? Have you ever seen the guys with the clipboards, jotting down notes on players, effectively deciding their futures with every pen stroke? Well guess which player these guys are licking their lips to see? Jake freakin Virtanen. This IS a player that scouts lust for. Scouts salivate at the physical tools; the kid has mass, a deadly shot, and elite speed. He was literally born to play this sport. Hockey sense/smarts come into play come game time, and that's where a guy like Ehlers shines. But this is nature of our sport. Skating is number 1. Strength is number 2. And if you're supposed to be a goal scorer, Shot is number 3. Jake gets picked ahead of Ehlers every single time. In every draft! Even going back to Atom, Pewee, Bantam, etc. Jake was 1st OA in his WHL bantam draft, dude. It would take a real bold GM to veer from that in his first ever NHL draft. There literally was not another option for Jimbo. In essence, Jake Virtanen reminds me a lot of my younger brother. I was an obsessed hockey fanatic, practiced shooting pucks for 3+ hours a day growing up, ran my own goaltending clinics in high school, lived and breathed sport. My brother couldn't even name a player on the Vancouver Canucks. He was 6'2 by the age of 15 and I maxed out at 5'8. I had to watch as all my efforts were denied, never once even making it past the first round of rep tryouts, while baby bro made the AAA team every single year. He had no passion for the sport, almost seemed like he didn't even enjoy it, but regardless, coaches wanted him because of his NATURAL, god-given abilities. Long legs, beautiful stride, hard shot, heavy hitter, no heart. My brother IS Jake Virtanen. I agree with your post in that JV has all the physical gifts that we desperately need, in fact I loved his game as a rook, every hit he dished out shook the boards, never seen a rookie hit like that. However, we need goal scoring and at this point he is far from a goal scorer. I wish JV would live up to his potential but like I said we must wait 4 years min to see his true potential. PF take time to develop and at this point everything that can go wrong has gone wrong from injuries to development. Not a hater but a Nuck realist who expects things to just mess up just because. For a top 10 pick, this is considered a failure, and it is even heightened by the fact we are still led by a pair of 36 year olds. Like I said, compare JV to Bo and there is no comparison because I could live with Bo's struggle as a fan due to his intense work ethic. In fact Bo has added to his game since he was drafted, but we have only seen Jake regress and then call out his coach (after he accomplished zilch) on national tv. Way to go bud, now go ride the pine.

Brad Marchand
Trying to piece the whole thing together: 1) Send Jake down to play 2 games last Friday and Saturday 2) Team was on road trip so he doesn't have enough stuff, recall him 3) Comets don't play again until today, keep Jake up to practice with Canucks until then 4) Send him down again, potentially play today All I could gather from this was that the decision to send Virtanen down was made during the road trip. Poor guy is hopefully done getting yo-yoed.

If I was Jake I'd be getting more than frustrated at being jerked around like this. Lets hope they keep him in one place for more than two games, if only to avoid forgetting his stuff all the time. I think they are throwing willie a bone. In his post game interview last night he mentioned it seems half the time hes being talked too its about jake. Maybe management just opted to move him back to throw willie a lifeline. Give him another couple games without jake being the center of his demise. Makaramel MacKhiato
NHL has to find something around this 1-2 year lull for drafted players. Some are too good for the WHL, but not good enough for the NHL, but not old enough for the AHL. It puts a lot of players in an awkward spot. Teams should someone be allowed to send certain 18 or 19 year old players to the AHL. That could've saved Virtanen and numerous other prospects who lose their desire because they aren't facing players that'll prepare them for the big leagues. It isn't their fault the team leans on 37 year old players for ALL of the offence. They shouldn't be the first line anymore. Not their fault the team couldent plan a BJ in brothel. I am not blaming them exclusively. I am just saying that there are many times the last few years where they make mistakes, play lazy defensively, get too cute with the puck that costs goals, etc. They are Teflon coated though and are never held to the same standard as others. That creates a bad environment for any team when your leaders are enabled to play that way and never held accountable when they do by the coach or even by themselves. The fact that the team relies on them for offense especially means that when they play a perimeter style or get too cute they should be held accountable. Lord knows if Virtanen or any other rookie passed up on those kind of shots that Henrik did they would be called out to get back to basics, etc by Desjardins.
