Warhippy
Just a genuine question and potential discussion. Over the last 2 seasons we've seen quite a few trades being made to dump cap. Whether it is one big contract for a bunch of little ones. Retention trades or near pure cap circumvention. But as it is an expansion year and everyone seems to be holding their cards pretty close to their chest I was wondering if cap dump trades have the same value they did even 5 months ago. Trade examples. Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey for Cowan, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and a 2nd Kessel, Biggs, Erixon 2016 2nd for Spaling, Kapanen, Harrington 2016 1st and 3rd round picks with Toronto retaining $1.3 million per year Bickel and Teravainen for a 2nd and 3rd (Bickel now has MS diagnosis and will sit on LTIR leaving Carolina off the hook for much of his cap) Bolland and Crouse for a 2nd and 3rd round pick in alternating years Datsyuks contract for a 1st Some of these were washed out via contracts, some with high skill prospects and in the end beneficial for all teams. There are more examples of course but these are the immediate ones that come to mind. But with this year being an expansion year I am curious if any GM is eager to cough up skilled yougng prospects/picks in order to free up cap space or contract slots for signings. Thoughts on whether the expansion has quelled these kinds of trades for this season?
BananaMash
Depends on how many bad contracts a team has, I'd think. If you've got more than one, there's probably still some value in it. Or, if the player has a NMC and you'd be forced to protect them, there's definitely some value in it (assuming you can convince them to waive to a particular team). Other than that, I'd expect most to hold out and hope the player gets claimed by Vegas. A player like Bolland or Double Dion probably has a lot of appeal to a startup team, even though they're not living up to their contract.
Toews
Anaheim is going to be in a bind. Of course there is little potential for a trade with the Canucks but they will have to make a move and even then they will still end up losing a good player. This is not even factoring that at present Bieksa holds a NMC making it a requirement for him to be protected or he agrees to waive that privilege. If he does not agree to waive the Ducks might be forced to buy him out. I would have said that there is little chance of a trade but with only one year left on his contract he could be a decent locker room presence even if his skills have diminished significantly. The Lightning are in a similar spot. They have way too much talent and are bound to lose a good player. Perhaps Callahan could be a good trade target for the Canucks provided Tampa sends the appropriate compensation. I have not looked into the details of the clauses in his contract but there is no chance that Las Vegas is going to claim him so even if he does have a NMC it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I would love to see a player like Alex Killorn in a Canucks jersey, maybe Lightning might be amenabl to move him.

We don't have the cap space to take on Callahan's 5.8 million cap hit and he's got another 3 years left on his contract. No way we can get him so I would believe the Lightning would maybe expose him to the expansion draft so they can dump that contract and use the money to re-sign Johnson, Palat, Sustr, Koekkoek, Nesterov, and give Drouin a raise
cripplereh
well for us we might be able to get rid of one or two but then we would have to give up picks like a Dorsett or something I could see benning if we are not near a playoff spot trading some players at the deadline Burr for whatever pick Miller for whatever pick Skille for whatever pick Megna for whatever pick Hansen for young gun and 4th or a late 1st Larsen for whatever pick Archibald for whatever pick Grenier for whatever pick Pedan for whatever Nilsson for whatever pick or do bundles to get a player or two that will help next year Then at draft maybe trade these picks plus others and get another D or go for best C in the draft
Dral
If a contract is bad enough that you need to pay another GM to take it on in a trade... why would an expansion team take it in the expansion draft?
