Maple Leafs, Red Wings unveil Centennial Classic sweaters

When the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings take to BMO Field on Jan. 1 as part of the Centennial Classic, they will do so in style.

The two Original Six clubs revealed their outdoor game jerseys on Monday.

The iconic Toronto franchise will skate in a dark blue jersey featuring a white maple leaf. Also of note, the pants are emblazoned with the logo of the Toronto Arenas, the original name Toronto donned from 1917 to 1919. The Maple Leafs are celebrating their 100th anniversary this season.

The Red Wings opted for a clean yet simple look, but unique to the sweater is the silver band on both arms, which displays the year of each of the franchise's 11 Stanley Cup championships. The Red Wings have won four Cups since 1997, including their most recent in 2008.

I get the original Six tradition thing but boy, this particular game between the current Leafs and Wings is lacking a bit of lustre and pretty low on the 'who cares' meter.

Special jerseys are nice just another money grab.

Could be worse, could be soccer with new jerseys every year and often a set of 3rds plus possibly cup jerseys. You're right on the 'who cares' meter though, just another game as far as I'm concerned.

Called marketing bro.  New kit each year for the clubs keeps the cash register ringing.  Although not a fan of the sponsorship theme which obviously dates back to the early days of football (soccer) when it was necessary.  However if your team wins a title outside of league play would you not want to purchase a jersey celebrating that?
