Value of our young trio of blue liners

- Exactly, he hasn't played 20 games and he's already AMAZING with his 3 points, and will apparently already beat all of the Canucks great defenseman.   Remember our future captain, a certain Cody Hodgson?

Stecher is going to be something special. I'm not willing to project either way, but all one has to do is watch him play to see the talent he has. And that sentiment has been echoed outside of Vancouver.

- It's called being realistic.  If you had to bet your house that either of these 3 defenseman would turn out to be a good 3rd or 4th NHL defenseman or a top 10 in the whole league, where would you put your money?

True. But what's your angle here? VIC CITY's post was an inquiry into their present value, not some statement of their projected future dominance in the league, although I find it hard not to see how Tryamkin isn't already physically dominant.

Also, I'm not a betting man.

- Of course bust happens all the time.  But when they are unproven,, recently drafted and with a season or less in experience, yes high profile matters.  Teams never really give up a high profile draft pick the year after his draft for lesser valued asset.  Arizona wouldn't trade Dylan Strome for lower 2nd rounder Aho, because Aho is in the NHL and Strome isn't.  Maybe in 3 years that would change, but that early, high profile matters.

Agreed. Projections, on average, usually pan out fairly consistently, as they are based on well versed individuals monitoring prospects performance over large swaths of time, and some analytics (can't forget the analytics!). I do think though that some of these d-men are going to break their ceilings personally.

Yet, his PPG average is currently below Hutton's PPG of last year.

I mean, it's not like we have a great history of great rookie defenseman, so I guess the bar isn't so high for Stetcher, but I would still argue Edler was our best offensive rookie defenseman...the comparison to Lidstrom were legitimate, it just never materialized.

Ya I thought about the PPG thing but I think Stetcher's PPG will improve as the season goes along and IMO Stetcher's offensive skillset is clearly ahead of Huttons.

Juolevi is yet to come and Subban could emerge as a prolific scorer. In the end, it could come down to some tough decisions. The time will come when determining the proper balance between Grit and skill will have to be made. On the skill side we have Stetcher, Hutton Subban and Juolevi. On the grit side, we have Gudbranson, Tryamkin and Sbisa (yes, he can lay a good, hard body check when he wants to), with Tanev as the stay at home defenseman.

A future core defense of:

Juolevi          Stetcher

Hutton          Gudbranson

Tryamkin      Sbisa

looks pretty good to me.

The obvious omitions are Edler and Tanev. Edler has become stale here and it's time to go. I like Tanev but have a better appreciation for Sbisa's willingness to get his nose dirty. Both make too much money to be a seventh defenseman.

One thing I've always wondered is if Subban could work as a forward. It seems the #1 knock on him is size. The thing that keeps him alive is his offensive ability. Why not put him in a position where size is of less concern. He possesses great offensive instincts and good speed. Putting him at forward only gives him more opportunity to fill the net.

Could he make a good winger?

For me, the bottom line is, the value of our young defensemen is more to us than moving them elsewhere. In stead, we should be looking for a new home for Edler and, when Juolevi's ready, Tanev.

They'll be good but people really need to chill out and stop thinking every single young guy we have is a potential superstar.

None of these guys are going to be a Burns or Karlsson or Keith

Nope those are levels only signified with a Cup.

PS - The last time we had a strong young D core like this, a young, truculent Brian Burke traded one (McCabe) to the Blackhawks in one of the best draft day deals ever, allowing us to land both Sedins...

Twins fall off the hockey tree so often...

It's time to give Sbisa some more credit, btw.

He's playing good, his stats are good, he has experience and is still only 26 years old.

He's not the best but he's very solid.

And he isn't a softie D, which is a big plus,

He and Tryamkin are actually one of the better third pairs in the league.

Still too early too tell. JV is an unfinished project. We don't know the type of player he's going to be.

Also, McCann was the main piece that brought us back Gudbranson.

You're acting like JB drafted Patrik Stefan...

In his first draft we also got demko and tryamkin - not exactly slacking off

What is this negative crap? How do you know this?

Nobody knows, what the ceilings are for those players.... How about some optimism, for the youth being introduced to the team...

Well for example, Karlsson is only 26 and has already been an all-star for a few seasons now, Tryamkin and Stecher are both 22 Hutton is 23.

So unless you see something in them that's going to turn them into superstars in the next year or two then....yeah.

So we can't be excited unless they're going to develop into a bonafide # 1 dman? Do you even remember what our defensive depth chart looked like a year ago? We literally had nothing...
