Notes:

- Meeting with Quintal, speak to GM, coaches/players.

- Tough loss got emotional in Toronto, just want to play, win.

- Credit to Anaheim, played well. Have to play with more determination.

- On injuries - Rodin skating on own, no timetable. Tanev 'week to week', been skating. Boeser - wrist bone bruise (talks with Johnson)

- On Virtanen - playing well, practicing hard, playing well in games , getting chances. 2-way improving.

-  RE recall - be patient with Virtanen, tonnes of time in game, and practicing. 'let him develop'.

- RFA contracts - in contact with agents.

- Gudbranson, plays physical, believes he's in adjustment period, getting used to team and the west.

- Horvat TOI - Willie is aware they are playing well, important guy going forward. (dodges question on time on ice)

- Tryamkin/Stecher - played well for us, Stecher taken off. Excellent, aggressive, gets shots through. Tryamkin - long reach, conditioned well after coming to camp. Both have stepped up with Edler/Tanev out.

-  Trade market slow, so many teams in LTIR or at the cap. If something makes sense, he'll pull trigger. 'not much going on' - thinks 20 or so teams seeking a scorer.

Patient with him eh....want him to develop.......then what was he doing in Vancouver last year?

I'm pretty much on board with most of JB/TL's decisions since they've been in charge, but he (Virt) was rushed along last year - that cannot be reasonably disputed.  Now, in hindsight, they're finally doing the right thing and he's where he should be, practicing and developing his overall game in Utica instead of sitting in the pressbox in Vancouver.

The whole Virt thing reeks of ownership interference - they wanted to fill seats and knew Virt could do that - admittedly this theory is just imo and I acknowledge that.

What a joke the NHL is.  Quintal meeting with the Canucks?  What's he going to say?

"I know the league didn't do sweet **** all to protect your star player from a blind side hit to the head, but you better not retaliate and police the issue yourself or else!"

Well that, and probably the fact they (the coaching staff) really didn't (don't?) have a player like him; we all see how he just goes right through people; but is having that type of player worth jeopardizing the development of your 6th overall pick? I think we're all glad they figured it out.

Something tells me they kept him with the club to keep him away from distractions. I've grown up in BC and I'm in a similar age group to Virtanen and know some players (ECHL level) who have played with him or gone to school with him. Their take on the Canucks keeping him up was that he's a cool guy and likes to party and sometimes he gets a little overzealous. Even I've seen him out and about in Whiterock pretty lit with some of his friends, and to be honest nobody would even bat an eye if he wasn't a pro sports players. But he is, and was drafted in the top ten of his class. There's a lot riding on him from the perspective of the Canucks, so they probably wanted to ensure he had his head on straight or at the least they could keep an eye on him to see how he would respond.

Oh now we're all about letting players develope .

and god I hope we're not one of the teams looking for a scorer, we need to be trading some players away for the expansion draft and a bottom five finish for the draft would be great.

aquiring a forward now Likely means we can't protect Baer or granlund. Hansen should go so we can protect both, get assets back and finish low.

Don't you think keeping him in his home town with nhl money is a lot bigger distraction than playing in juniors?

i certainly do

Hard to say, especially if you're assuming that there's probably a significant difference between an NHL player's daily routine/schedule/commitments and one playing in the WHL. Try to visualize a young kid playing in the NHL with coaching staff and mature players surrounding him and the impact this has on changing how he views and achieves his goals, vs one who plays with younger kids and more freedom outside of the rink.

^This is depressing because he's saying Gudbranson isn't the player they thought he'd be right away. The exact same thing was said after Sbisa played and they got a read on type of player he was. I hope everyone can see what the implication of this statement is. I can't wait to cry when Gudbranson is signed to a deal north of $5M per.

^Jake can't even hold his ground in the A. I'm concerned he's lost his instincts that made him so successful in junior seeing that it's not translating to the pro level. Young, yes, but he's playing like a grinder when we drafted him as a dynamic goal scoring power forward / he's forgot all about his offense.

^Self explanatory lol. Even JB doesn't get WillieD's thought process and clearly isn't really on the same page. I don't think Willie got the memo that Bo is the teams leading goal scorer and he worked his way out of the 4th line at the beginning of the season - a place where he shouldn't have been to start off with anyways.

Well, I have to say that theory is pretty far fetched imo - keeping him in Vancouver so he wouldn't be making poor choices  - but some would say my theory of ownership interference is far fetched as well so there you go.

On the theory of him 'keeping his head on straight' - I have to call BS on that one simply because since day one here JB/TL have preached CHARACTER above all else - if they had doubts whatsoever about this kids character then he wouldn't have been drafted, no?

That is a great gift you have reading things that aren't said. Kudos.

You're right, the same thing was said about Sbisa. And guess what? Sbisa is turning out to be a good player for us.

Well they had options that year between Virtanen and Richie both of whom fit a need. From what I can recall, Richie had character issues as well. They needed an offensive PWF and they selected Jake - lesser of the two evils kind of concept at play is what I can see.

When they drafted him they probably had a decent understanding of who he was, but not entirely. Not that he's a wild animal or anything, but maybe he needed to be on a shorter leash to mitigate risk down the line.

If good as in not terrible anymore, then yes I agree. He's able to hold his ground now at times but he's "good" because he's not being a complete liability on defense anymore.

...btw Guddy brought in was different than Sbisa. Sbisa JB said he'd need to grow. Guddy was said to be an immediate top4 impact dman fwiw :/

I hear where you're coming from, and Guddy is definitely less impressive than we would hope for him to be out of the gate, but it's just very difficult to assess what we have in him right now. He's still relatively young at 24, still seems to be finding his game on a new team, and we're only a quarter of the way in this year. Considering that and especially for a defenseman, you have to assume the best is yet to come from him still. I think that's all JB meant. Now, what his "best" will turn out to be, that's up for debate.

it's nice to hear that Johnson is checking up on Boeser occasionally to see how he is doing during his recovery on his arm injury. Guddy is adjusting to life in the Western Conference as it is a whole different animal than how it is in the Eastern. i like to see him shoot more as well. yesterday he got a few shots off but it was either easily stopped by the goalie or going wide. like to see him rip one timers like what Stecher does. Stecher, Horvat, Eriksson, Sbisa, Marky, Tanev probably are our candidates for unsung hero through quarter of the season thus far. also this team is also exceeding expectations as theyre playing better than what was expected and the record is better than what was projected. but definitely last night was a learning curve for the young guns

Hope Management tells Quintal to shove it, and take his band-aid intimidation act back to the Head Office.

The League is late.  Talk about it within 24hrs, don't show up 3weeks after the fact.
