Adjustment period?  He's from the Eastern Conference not the KHL.

There are more than a number of players, coaches, and management personnel that have noted that the Western Conference is much tougher than the East. All those involved regardless of level of management note that playing in the West is tough and takes some time to get used to because of the amount of hours spent on the plane and the number of time zones they have to cross. In the East, it's mainly one time zone and just going up and down the coast whereas the West is jumping from one time zone to another time zone on a week to week basis.

I remember Sportsnet had a little segment on the Oilers before the season started and one thing that was pointed out was that Peter Chiarelli noted how much of a difference the Western Conference teams have when he first became GM in his first year of the Oilers. He noted there was less practice time, less time to focus on certain things in the locker room and on the ice, and a lot more travelling time in the plane, where you can't really do much on a plane except for sit and wait.

It's also a matter of familiarity with your opponents, gettng used to new systems, team-mates and linemates, etc.

We heard last night about Vermette having played so many years in the same division as the Sedins - and therefore he reads them better than most other opponents (not an easy task).   The reverse is the case for a new, young D out here - who knows relatively less of the Western Conference, having played most teams maybe once or twice a year.  For a defensive player, the lack of familiarity is certainly not an advantage.

But people want to see self-fulfilling prophecies of fail realized for some reason - and points like this interfere with negative expectations.
