[Waivers] Ted Purcell

Recommended Posts

NHL has become a tough league for veteran players.  This guy was pretty good and now at 31, he's waiver fodder.  With the cap hit and growing salaries, teams need to keep the younger, cheaper players and let go of the older guys.

It's fine for the youngin's that can get the good contracts early on, but not so great for players that don't start making $$$ until later in their careers.

Yes Exactly, and is why Errikson makes no sense at all.

And this making money at a younger age is why no one should worry about our college guys (Boeser, Lockwood).  They will turn pro with us, because it's their best financial move to do so as early as possible.

Yeah, this is one I'd pass on too. Don't need a 30+ year old fringe guy, but taking a chance on one of the many young forwards in their early 20s on waivers this year would've been nice... someone will snap him up though, he's a decent bandaid player to paste into your lineup.

He might be a good option to expose for the expansion draft. He might be a trade-able asset later on as well.

I like this line of thinking. Makes me wish we had a few more disposable assets we could deal at the deadline to stock up on picks since management doesn't seem like they want to sell the bigger assets. Purcell's value seems to have bottomed out though.

I haven't followed him the last couple of years but he was a really good player before that. As one poster previously stated, he put up a solid season again last year. Not sure what his story is this year but he just turned 31, so it's not like he's that old. Even if he scored at a 35 point clip for the rest of the year, which isn't that much of a stretch for him, that would be 2nd line production for our team.

I think he could be a good pick up for us and would surely be better than most of our AHL call ups. I'd have to know a little more about his situation though. 12 games isn't that big of a sample size from him this year.

Also, are you allowed to trade players you've just picked up on waivers? I thought they had to stay on your roster for the rest of the year or be offered back to their previous club? So I'm not sure about the "pick him up to trade him away" argument.

Mike Condon was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh and then traded a week later for a 5th rd pick to Ottawa

Damn LA savage.

Slow start sure, doubt he is deserving of waivers.

43 points last season. A couple of 50+ point seasons.

This new NHL really is crazy age wise. Even at 30-32 you are considered ancient vet who is easily replaceable.

NHL teams can trade a player claimed on waivers. The player must first be offered to the other teams that filed claims when he was waived and claimed  (if there were other teams that filed claims). If none of those teams want the player (or no other team filed a claim during the waivers process), then the claiming club is free to make a trade.

The claiming club, if trading the player, is not required to offer the player back to the club that initiated waivers. They are only required to offer the player to any teams that filed waivers claims (when the player was originally waived).

Probably what you're thinking about here is when a team claims a player off waivers and then waives that player again during the same season. In that case, if the original club makes a successful claim, they can assign the player directly to the AHL (without waivers).

EDIT: The Etem case probably provides a good illustration. When the Canucks waived Etem, it's believed the Ducks were the only NHL club that filed a claim. So the Ducks could have traded Etem if they wanted to (and could find a willing partner). And when the Ducks waived Etem, no teams filed claims. However, if Vancouver had filed a successful claim, they would have been allowed to assign Etem directly to Utica (without waivers).

Thanks. I'm sure this was discussed at length earlier this year but it's intereting that JB didn't reclaim Etem and send him to Utica. Makes you think that there's more to the story than what meets the eyes. After all, you'd think he'd have a leg up on the Chaput's of the world.

However, after just googling Etem's stats for the year, he's only played in 1 AHL game. Where the hell is he?
