What pieces are we actually missing?

Your definition of elite may be more elite than mine, but when I watch Marner play I feel like I'm watching greatness. His numbers are very similar to Patrick Kane's rookie numbers, but I kind of feel like he's going to be better ( even though I know that's a ridiculous thing to say).

I dunno... right now he's got easy minutes. Lets see what happens when he has actual defensive responsibilities and playoff time.

Willie's point was our prospects were not ready for the NHL because they required the kind of coaching you only get in the AHL. Unfortunately our two prospects could not go to the AHL so Willie was left to try to make the best of it - which he did.

Not to mention having to put young players into roles they weren't really ready for due to injuries last year. Horvat into Sutters role, Hutton moved up to top pair etc. The there was also that team record for the number rookies playing their first NHL game last year.

When you put players in over their head, whether because of injuries or just not NHL ready, the result can be good or bad for development. And more often than not it won't help towards winning games.

If management didn't screw up the tank we likely would have had Mathews and Bo as our top 2 centres with Hank 3rd. Or else Laine as a consolation prize. This year isn't as dire as last was to tank. 1st or 2nd pick would still be nice though.

ARZ finished ahead of us to draft Laine. We would have actually had to win more games to have gotten him.

idk how to post tweets on here, but, Button has Boeser (7), Juolevi (26), Demko (33) and Gaudette (39) all in his upcoming top 50 NHL prospect list. Nice to see.

*UPDATE*

Boeser (8), Juolevi (18), Demko (33) and Gaudette (40)

I've always been a fan of Button's scouting because he really does know his stuff so this is nice to see.

4 out of the top 50 players not in the NHL are Canucks prospects, but we over hype our prospects right? :P

_____ - Horvat - Boeser

Baertschi – _____ – _____

Granlund – Gaudette – Lockwood

Virtanen - Gaunce - _____

Juolevi – Tryamkin

Hutton – Stecher

Brisebois – Gudbrandson

Demko

Markstrom

Add Dahlen and Goldobin to that mix, it's starting to look good.

Now that we're tearing it down and aiming for more/higher picks, a couple high overall picks, mix that in with a couple college signings and a few key free agent signings, future looks good guys. :towel:

True, but what screwed us last year was that dumb-a$$ 6 game winning steak they went on with just a couple of weeks left in the season.

What did that do for us????????????????????????????????????????

It really had very little effect. Again, if we'd actually won more, Laine.

With the lottery you just let the chips fall.

This sentiment needs to stop. We've always been rebuilding, this is just another one of the many steps involved in doing so.

True, I agree, just meant it in the context of now we're actually aiming for high/more picks

1) How do you screw up lottery balls? 2) How was it possible to be as bad as Toronto was?

Toronto had a 22% chance of drafting #1... less than 1 chance in 4....  the fact they won Mathews is just pure dumb luck.

Winnipeg jumped ahead of Vancouver to draft Laine... more dumb luck.

There are no guarantees anymore as far as draft position is concerned.

Vancouver had a much better than average chance of drafting in the top 3... but their luck as usual, was cr*p.
